Is this POP e-mail? Are there any e-mails in other folders in the account? Or do you mean the phone is telling you that you have 9 e-mails in your in-box, but you can only see one?
I have sometimes had my old HTC Eris show new e-mails on the icon, when there were none there. Rebooting the phone seemed to clean it up. I haven't had this happen on the Rezound. Only had it a couple weeks though.
