Help Email not working

Lurker
I have a HTC Hero and I have been trying to set up my school email on my phone. There is another thread about my school's email but they never really said how they figured it out. They only have detailed directions for Iphone. These are the directions they have for general set up. I have tried it all but I just can't seem to get it to work. It says "cannot connect to server".

Use the following settings to check your MIX e-mail using the IMAP-capable client of your choice. When configuring your mail client from the examples below, please substitute your own MIX user name, e-mail address, and password (PIN) where noted.
General Settings
Connection/Account Type: IMAP
Account Name: username@mix.wvu.edu
Email Address: username@mix.wvu.edu (your complete MIX e-mail address)
Reply-To: username@mix.wvu.edu
Incoming Mail Server Settings
Server/Connection Type: IMAP
Host Name: mix.wvu.edu
User Name/Login: username (your MIX login user name only)
Password: ****** (your MIX password/PIN)
WVU Offers SMTP using your MasterID and password
Server name: exsmtp.wvu.edu
Port: 465
Use SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)
Use your MasterID. When your MasterID expires you will also need to update your phone.
If you have any questions, consult your provider for details as each device may be set up differently.

The only advice I can give you is to call your school's IT department or Help Desk. They are the ONLY ones who know the right server/port information that you need to get it set up. Just tell them you are trying to set up email on an android phone, I'm sure they have done it many times.

I wish that were the case but I've called 2 times now and no one has been able to help me. I will try again though.

Unfortunately, again, they are the only ones who can help you. We dont have the information on how their servers work, what the addresses/ports are, etc...

I would've thought that the iPhone details would be interchangeable with any phone/desktop client.

The people that work our OIT are just students who sit there and read to me what I've already read. They know nothing about servers or ports. I posted the Iphone directions below. I tried what they said but I don't know if I am interpreting something wrong. WVU has your email which is "mix.wvu.edu" and they have a masterID which you use to access the wireless internet and other things on campus. When talking about they set up they use both of them which is maybe throwing me off.
Directions for iPhones

  1. Select settings.
  2. Select mail, Contacts, Calendars
  3. Add account
  4. Select other
  5. Add Mail Account
  6. Add name, your MIX e-mail address, you MIX password, Description-MIX Hit save
  7. Select IMAP.
  8. Incoming Mail Server Add mix.wvu.edu
  9. Add your username
  10. Add your password (Remember you have to change your password every 90 days so you will have to change it here also.)
  11. Click Save.
  12. Add host name mix.wvu.edu
  13. Add your username
  14. Add your password
  15. Here you have a choice- SMTP-select no server and then arrow over to AT&T SMTP Server and turn it ON. Your current SMTP for AT&T should already be available to you.
  16. Another choice to you is to use WVU’s SMTP server. One caveat is that when you change you MasterId password, you will also need to change it here.
  17. Add server. Select Server name: exsmtp.wvu.edu
  18. Select Port: 465
  19. Use SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)
  20. Add your MasterID and password.
  21. Click save.

I finally figured it out. Instead of doing a complete manual set up I let my incoming server go out with the default settings. It went through. I had problems setting up outgoing but it is because the Incoming uses the "mix.wvu.edu" and the outgoing uses your "masterID" and exsmtp.wvu.edu and SSL. HOW CONFUSING! Also WVU needs to realize people don't just use Iphones and get some better set up directions! Thanks for the inspiration everyone! :D
