Help Email notification banner (for native Galaxy S4 app)

My Galaxy S4 does not produce a banner notification for new email messages, using the native email application, like it does for text messages.
Does anyone know if it is possible to configure it so that the Galaxy S4 will produce the notification banner when new emails arrive and if so, how?
