Help Email notification setting won't stick

I often get notification emails from credit cards or other groups in the wee hours so I set my email notification to silent so it won't wake me up but the icon still will appear on the notification bar. The problem is every time I check my email the device resets itself to a default tone. Is there a way to make the silent option stick??
