Help Email notifications repeats

How do I turn off repeat email/txt notifications? I only want it to tell me once when something new comes in. Mine alerts every 5 minutes until I clear it. This drives me up the wall when i'm sleeping, driving, playing on the phone, etc...

Sorry no one has gotten back to you. I always have a computer on with my Gmail inbox open, so I only get one notification on my phone per email. If I have my computer off, then, like you, it continues to notify. But I turn my phone off at night so it isn't an issue for me.

EDIT: Also, it only takes a second to clear the notification bar.
