Help Email on Droid seriously this bad?

I have three different email accounts setup on my Droid and none of them receive the email without manually going into each mailbox and refreshing it. I have tried to set it at 5 minutes but it never automatically receives email on its own. I have tried to use Maildroid instead of the default droid mail application but it is no better. I also had to shut my phone off and back on earlier today before my emails would start coming through again...... I am coming from a Blackberry where all my email was instant and I am afraid I might have to switch back if this is how Android phones handle POP email accounts :(

You're posting in the wrong subforum, hun. You either want the apps forum, or the Droid forum. You should ask a mod to move it for you.

I think the OP is referring to the Epic and not the Droid (based on his/her other posts). OP, can you confirm this?

That and it is probably the settings from your ISP or mail server settings. I had the same issue. What type of email accounts are they?

I have an EPIC and have Exchange, Yahoo and gmail. All of them update properly when the right settings are enabled.
Backround Data has to be on, each inbox has to be set to retrieve the info at certain times. (exchnage and gmail are as they arrive to the inbox, and yahoo is pop3 so they are set anywhere from 15minutes to 1 hour poll time.)
Please do give us some more info, device, email client, email type and if its a special email service provider.

I think some of these will be addressed with the Froyo update. Android only allows for pull notifications from POP3 servers. But I think the major issues fall under those who are using the stock email app.

I know alot of the said issues were resolved when a relative of mine switched over from the Epic to the EVO, which happens to have 2.2 Froyo on it already.

Otherwise, I would suggest using and have had good luck with K-9 Mail.

Yes sorry I meant Epic 4G. I finally was able to find a solution that involved setting all my emails inside of gmail and letting gmail handle everything now I get all my email instantly!

Thank heavens for GOOGLE

I'd like to show my brother how to do this. Is there a step by step somewhere?

I kept blaming my ISP email settings for my issues but it was on the phone and google account settings where I was missing it.
You set some of it from logging into your gmail account and make sure it matches your phone email settings.

Do you have a link or something you can provide so I can see the entire process of how to do this?

If you get tired of reading try..... www.youtube.com type in your question. How to setup mail with Android? and you will find numerous videos on ways to setup email accounts with android.

Try that with the suggestions above....

I was hoping Froyo would make the stock email work better, but it actually seems to work worse. I'm a little different than most people in that I'm disinclined to experiment installing external apps to give the phone functionality that it should have by itself. This is especially true with email - I'm trying to use the stock email app and have both my Gmail and Yahoo accounts in that. What if I had six email accounts - do I need to have an app for each? Plus, there are various problems that people report from the dedicated email apps - system resource and battery use is one of them. I do not want to overcomplicate my phone - I want simplicity, and no amount of Googling will change that.

Well you get what ya get. When things like Apps are free you have to take what they offer. That's why Yahoo charges 20.00 a year for the upgraded email.
I guess if you want it all in one place then 3rd party apps will have to be used. You can delete them.
If not, then you have to push one extra icon.
What a pain.
Oh, I have five emails and I get them all from one place on my phone...hmmm
I googled how to do that...

Thanks - that was impressively helpful! I gather from the documentation that you need a POP account; and in my case, for a Yahoo Account, Yahoo Plus has to be purchased for $20 a year in order to get a POP account.

It all depends on how long you have had your Yahoo account. I have been able to set up my Yahoo account on both my Droid and Epic with no problems using the IMAP settings...

Being that Android won't do push notifications for POP accounts, I think you are better off using IMAP if the option is available.

Every phone and OS has its pros and cons. Android is all about flexiblity and customizations. BB is focussed around the business sector, so of course email and syncing are going to be extremely easy to do.

So, sometimes you are going to have to venture out of the stock apps to get the functionality you are looking for. The stock email app is one that is plagued with issues, depending on what you are trying to do. Like mentioned above, K-9 is a great alternative that has a team focused on working out the kinks the stock app has (and yes, you can have 6 different accounts on it - I believe). Any issues with battery life using this app are usually associated with poor settings (i.e. too frequent of polling). I guess the moral of the story is: "you can lead a horse to water..."

Are you on pop or IMAP or exchange? Did you play with sleep settings under global preferences in maildroid? So many factors play a part in this.

Oh, Wilbur! I already have information in my settings that differ from what the link recommends. The link recommends on incoming settings: imap.mail.yahoo.com and port 143, but on my phone they are: android.imap.mail.yahoo.com with port 993.
The link recommends outgoing of smtp.mobile.mail.yahoo.com, port 587. On my phone it says android.smtp.mail.yahoo.com with port 465.

hmmm. The link I see that he posted reads, Motorola Droid not Samsung Epic...Could be me but could it be that they use different ports or protocols even though they both run Android I/O's ?
Both companies alter or add layers like HTC's sense.

I don't think it should matter, being as they are both Android phones. Email is email.
But I was not able to get the Yahoo account to push email to my Epic. I had to set up a polling time in order to get messages. Although those settings are from when I first got my Droid, so Yahoo, Hotmail, etc could have changed things around...

I do use K-9 Mail for my email though...

Actually thats not true, on the back end email is email, but on the front end, the device end, each manufacturer has its own version of an email client. The EVO and EPIC have totally different email clients and they handle mail seperately, some handle POP3 better then IMAP or exchange.
On my EVO i had issues sending mail using the stock mail app and yahoo pop3, on the EPIC with the same account but using the stock Samsung app i never had any problems with outgoing mail.

Uh, Well I'm sorry but maybe what bigwrigg stated is more in depth but it's what I was pointing too.
