email polling frequency cannot be changed

Right now I have a very weird problem. I use both K9 and the stock email app on my captivate. The check mail frequency is set to 5 minutes on both apps. I want to change them to 'never'. The change is not updated -- it is always stuck on 5 minutes. What am I doing wrong?

Both are set up as POP.

Set them up as IMAP, that enables Push as opposed to pull I believe.

Alternatively, you can turn Autosync off?
