Hmm... seems as though she doesn't have full Republican support behind her actions as several Republicans in that article have openly denounced her actions. It was definitely stupid and obviously she knew it was wrong because she didn't want it to be seen by everybody and only her select few recipients. She expected that they wouldn't be offended and wouldn't let anyone else see it so the racist joke could be kept within the group.

I understand that she could've just made a joke... but a racist joke.

I don't understand how that is racist? Maybe it's cause I'm not racist....but the guy isn't as talented as the ape.

Then you have some serious reading to do regarding racial stereotyping and its shameful history within the United States.

Accually a Racist would be the one that says I don't see how thats racist.

I'll let my lil friend speak

To be fair, we're all a little bit racist. For example, I'm racist against white people... damn whities with their big eyes! Go back to your country! :p

Oh i am fair . I hate everyone equally.:p

My limited belief, is that I think racism is for the shallow minded. Who points fingers at those who are different, to feel better about themselves. No offence meant to any racists. I believe, we as a whole, have more pressing and important issues to focus on. IMO.

to be honest though...... you have to admit......... there are FAR more people trying to play the race card and jumping the racism bandwagon than there are racists in todays society.........

give it up........ although racism still exists to a very small extent...... it is not alive and well........ so screaming racism is just a crutch used by people who fit the bill

racism isnt the reason for everything that goes wrong in your life.......... there are other reasons as well....... and most likely the reason is you (nobody in particular... just a general YOU)

I do agree that there are more people playing the race card, but this is one of those instances that is really quite clear of her intentions. This wasn't some harmless little joke that she wanted to keep secret.

Are you of a minority race? My bf (african american) and I (asian american) were both victims of racist slurs by 3 white guys at Indiana University this past weekend. Something they love to call me is "f**kin ch*nk" and well... I wont say what they said to him. This is the 2nd time this year for me and more than 4th time for him. This is not an uncommon occurrence here since there have been many instances of it happening even this past year. My own roommate is racist against my bf... or... erm... more prejudice. He only worries about him stealing something when he's here, that's all. (notice the sarcasm)

wow. i live in the south and no one has ever called me by a racist slur(i'm of Filipino decent).

your roomie isn't prejudice, he's just wary. tell him not to leave watermelon or fried chicken out in the open next time!

In sociological terms, he is 100% prejudice. I accidentally left my keys in my door key hole because I was too preoccupied with bringing groceries in and 2 hours later, had a knock at the door. It was one of my black neighbors who let me know that I left my keys in there. I thanked her a lot and when I closed the door, my roommate was surprised that she didn't decide to take them and take stuff out of my car. Keep in mind that this happened one time before (idiot me) and a white neighbor gave them to me and he said "Well that's nice of them."

I was absolutely shocked and literally speechless when he made those statements regarding her. If that's not prejudice, then I don't know what is.

it's a learned response from external stimulus.

If it's not prejudice, it's ignorance.

In fact I'd say it's ignorant prejudice. Have you challenged your room mate on these views?

I did talk to him about it afterwards but he basically just brushed it off.

Actually now that I realize it... he is a racist. In terms of sociology, he is classified as an aversive racist because he purposely avoids having interaction or friendships with black people. I looked at his friends list on Facebook before and he has no black friends.

Before I go any further, there is a clear distinction between prejudice, discrimination, and racism.

These are all in sociological terms:

Prejudice - an attitude and evaluation of individual based on group's conceptions that are believed despite facts that disprove

Discrimination - overt negative and unequal treatment based on group membership

Racism - perception and treatment of race and ethnic groups as intellectually, socially, and culturally inferior to one's own group (general overall term)

Types of Racism:

- old-fashion- overt, (e.g. lynching)
- aversive- avoiding interaction
- laissez-faire- persistent negative stereotyping, blame minority group for achievement gaps, resistance to policies designed to ameliorate oppression
- color-blind- ignoring legitimate race and ethnic differences, hides white privilege - whites consider themselves tolerant, but ignore structural racial dominance; assume meritocracy
- institutional- oppression by institutions, dominant groups have economic/political power to subjugate minorities (e.g. racial profiling in criminal justice system)

According to sociology, there is still a lot of racism in this world, not just in this nation. Just because you don't hear about it so often in the news, doesn't mean it's dying down. I remember my sociology professor explaining that racism has gone down, but not as much as we would all like to hope (or not for those people). Essentially, it's better concealed. I mean... how many people would like to be labeled as racists? My roommate certainly doesn't. I called him a racist before and he firmly denied it.

he avoids interactions with black folks because he thinks they are inferior to him? he told you this?

by what you have described, i would use that prejudice definition you supplied to describe him. and he is aversive due to the prjudices he holds. i highly doubt he thinks black folks are inferior to him.
