I did talk to him about it afterwards but he basically just brushed it off.
Time to start to mock him for the colour of his hair or something. When he says it's stupid to do that then you can point out that it's just as stupid (if not more so) to have an attitude to someone just for the colour of their skin.

he avoids interactions with black folks because he thinks they are inferior to him? he told you this?

by what you have described, i would use that prejudice definition you supplied to describe him. and he is aveersive due to the prjudices he holds. i high ly doubt he thinks black folks are inferior to him.

Don't take the racism term so literally. It's simply a general term that doesn't work in all of the different types of racism (ex. aversive and color-blind). You can be both prejudice and racist and prejudice feeds the racism.

Which is why they should be challenged...so as to get the opportunity to unlearn the response.

Do you mean it as like a biological response?

I need to clarify that there is no such thing as ignorant prejudice in sociology. There is ignorance and prejudice but no ignorant prejudice. Prejudice people hold negative attitudes towards a group of people based on one's conceptions which are believed despite facts that disprove

In this instance: Even though my black neighbor gave me my keys which were in the door, he completely ignored that fact and kept blabbering about how he was surprised that she didn't decide to take them.

I'm not sure if there is ignorant prejudice in some other context but I know it's not in sociology.

I'm not sure I understand that question.

Are his responses biological? I thought they were psychological.

Oh ok that's what I meant. Sorry... it was just a bit unusual for me to see the term "response" and not have it relate to science. lol I haven't seen that in my sociology class as they phrase things differently. Well racism is basically created by society since race is a social construct. It would be very difficult to make someone not racist if they have been through years of socialization to believe what they believe. It can be done but really... it's very difficult, especially since there are no 'help groups' for racists. lol

I'm not a sociologist...it's just how I see such behaviour.

If there is no such thing as ignorant prejudice, then there are a lot of people who are ignorant and prejudiced. ;)

Oh I completely understand.

And to your second statement... HALLELUJAH!

i've been thru this discussion before...taken quite a few sociology classes on my way to a psych degree. the kid has prejudices. that DOES NOT make him racist.

In the UK we call this Racial Prejudice. Racism/Racial Prejudice? Just a question of semantics. The outcome is the same.

wow. i live in the south and no one has ever called me by a racist slur(i'm of Filipino decent).

your roomie isn't prejudice, he's just wary. tell him not to leave watermelon or fried chicken out in the open next time!

In the south people of asian descent tends to fall under their radar. Its the african americans that the whites of the south hates.

to be honest though...... you have to admit......... there are FAR more people trying to play the race card and jumping the racism bandwagon than there are racists in todays society.........

give it up........ although racism still exists to a very small extent...... it is not alive and well........ so screaming racism is just a crutch used by people who fit the bill

racism isnt the reason for everything that goes wrong in your life.......... there are other reasons as well....... and most likely the reason is you (nobody in particular... just a general YOU)
Ok I beg to differ with your statement. racism is a big part of many in the south. Especially in your little one red light towns and in the county. THere is still a town in Georgia that has a sign still up at the city limits that states and N****** caught in town after sunset will be hung. SO dont tell me its not alive and well. Just head down to one of them small lil town and ask the people if they love the African americans in their community. I bet they will say yeah we love them dead.

Get out of your fools world that people are becoming more tollerent. Granted they cant go and do a lynching like they use to but its still around. Dont get these skin heads mixed up with the true KKK. They like to keep secret and for all you know you might be friends with one

To be fair, we're all a little bit racist. For example, I'm racist against white people... damn whities with their big eyes! Go back to your country! :p

That's not being fair, that's rationalizing your own problems and projecting something not truthful onto the rest of us.

To be truthful, many of us are not racist at all.

When you've watched people die violently for no other reason than their skin color, as I often have, when you've been beaten and left for dead because of your skin color, get back to me on how that tracks to what you think you know.

I predict you'll either learn to hate the skin color of those responsible for the violence, or you'll perhaps learn a little bit more about racism, discrimination and prejudice than you know now.

is that coming from your experience as an Asian in the south, or as a white person in the south, or maybe even as a black person in the south, or just by what you have heard?

i've heard many Asians referenced by whites in the south derogatorily. it's just never happened to me.

THere is still a town in Georgia that has a sign still up at the city limits that states and N****** caught in town after sunset will be hung.
wrong. Forsyth County, and the sign said, "“N***** DON’T LET THE SUN SET ON YOU IN FORSYTH COUNTY.” it is no long is there and hasn't been there since at least 2004, when Trey Lopez wrote "An Exodus".

amazing the lengths people will go to try and win a discussion.

Then you have some serious reading to do regarding racial stereotyping and its shameful history within the United States.

Actually that part of our history is dead. There is no one alive that owns or has benefited from slavery. I honestly do not know how calling a black man an ape is any worse then calling a white man an ape? IF this is true then there is a double standard that favors the black man. This would mean the black man is more equal then the white man.....now how is that EVER going to solve racial prejudice?

Seem to mean the ones screaming racist are the racists.

Btw I grew up a hour away from Auschwitz I know what racism looks like and this just ain't it.

Actually, as the link in the first post makes plain, racial stereotypes and the ugly mindset that clings to them are far from dead. Try to keep up please.

I grew up in the Northeast (Philly burbs) but I've been living in Texas for the past 16 years. I can honestly say that I've witnessed more instances of racist/ignorant attitudes towards blacks when I lived up North than I have so far in the South. Perhaps this is due to the different socioeconomic circles I was in when I was younger? Also the South seems more integrated in terms of blacks and whites living in the same neighborhoods. My wife who is a minority remarked at the lack of diversity where I grew up outside of Philly when we visited family there. This is all anecdotal of course, but I guess my point is the smug attitude that many Northerners have toward Southerners when it comes to race relations isn't warranted in my experience.

When I was younger and visited Texas for a few months, I felt there was more racism towards mexicans/spanards. I'm not sure if it was the relatives/friends I was exposed to.

Wow EarlyMon. You took a sarcastic comment seriously. I thought my sentence afterwards would show that I was joking but I guess not.

I'm learning a lot here but let me make one observation. When Dubya was compared to an ape nobody called it racism.

There's no racial history with white people and apes. It's like when people call a white person the 'n word' versus calling a black person the 'n word'. I don't know if you know the context of that word or not. I'm not sure how familiar you are with US's history when it comes to slavery and the use of the word from white owners or definite racists towards black slaves or simply black people in general.

Oh I'm well aware. You don't dare use the 'N' word in the UK and rightly so.

I know it's different for whites and blacks in this regard but I shouldn't be. Our ancestors have a lot to answer for here.

My parent's generation still struggle with being prejudiced but finally my generation are shaking it off. My kids generation are doing even better. The 'best man' at my sister's wedding (in the 1980s) was black and while that was not a problem for us, he did get some very strange looks from some of my more elderly relatives.

For what it's worth, my understanding is that racism came about because of slavery. There were black people in Europe before slavery and as far as I know it wasn't really an issue.

People tend to hate those who are different than themselves for whatever reason. I was driving home today and drove by the HQ of a group of local rabble rousers. There were about 10-15 of them and they were out waving signs calling for the deficit to be paid down by raising taxes on "rich people." One of them was so grossly obese that she couldn't even stand up with the rest of the protesters and was sitting in a chair. I nearly yelled at her to use her food budget to pay off the deficit, but thought better of it as I recognized some of our company's clients in the crowd.

I think it really boils down to people tend to dislike those who are different and it's much easier to tell that someone is of a different race than that they're of a different financial status.

I think you need to keep up. This is the year 2011. You can cling to your ugly mindset if you like but the rest of us will be moving on.
