Help Emails disappear from Imap inbox in outlook

I've set my dad up so that gmails are seen in IMAP inbox in outlook...though just recent something has changed and once he views them on his phone they are removed from that inbox, but still seen in All Mail.
This is likely not an issue specific to this phone, but how can I reverse this (with what setting on phone/gmail), so that they remain in both places until physically deleted?

On outlook you need to change the send receive settings to behave in the way you desire...
I had the same issue before and fixed it by removing the account from outlook and setting it up again.
This time using the correct settings.
And ticking the appropriate boxes.

... The glitch is because Microsoft keeps on changing their software, servers and services...
Sometimes all you need to do to fix it. Is by removing the account and setting it up again. And just fixes itself automatically.

I'm always having nightmares using the now old Outlook 2010 it just drives me mad at times. lol
