Help Embaressing n00b Gmail "Q"

Ok, I have had my GS2 for 4 days now and am enjoying it. Coming from the iPhone4 I am learning more and more.
One question though.
My email icon shows a notification badge and also along the top notification bar if i recieve an email but if i receive any Google mail my Gmail icon doesnt show any notification badge apart from along the top next to the normal email notification.

Is there a setting to allow a notification badge to appear on the Gmail icon?

No, it was possible using an app called ADW Notifier until recent updates to Android removed the ability. Afaik there's currently no way to get this sort of notification badge on the core Google apps.

Thanks Slug, thought there might have been a problem my end. Bit of a culture shock coming from iOS, loving the phone all the same.
