Yes you can but there not a lot of them like 3rd party messaging apps

Those are actually emoticons. You can't view any emojis unless you download a 3rd party messaging app.

If you don't mind paying to actually see them in black and white, download emoji font updater from the play store. Then use the emoji keyboard to actually send them. Works great for me

Does this "emoji" stuff have anything to do with the fact that I can't receive certain characters and images from people on iPhones? My aunt sends me messages sometimes and instead of getting an icon I get an MMS with every letter spaced out and where the icon should be is a strange character

Yup. If you use the emoji plugin with go sms you could probably see them.
