Help "Enable Assisted GPS"?

Under settings > location & security settings, there's 3 check boxes for location...1) Use wireless networks, 2) use gps satellites, and 3) enable assisted gps.

Does anyone know what 3) is or does? Is it something to make gps more accurate?

I usually run with 1 and 2 enabled. Turned 3 on today and saw a noticeable battery drain but couldn't see what it actually does.

Makes my Droid X's temp soar to 104 and getts very hot on the backside at first when I would enable it not knowing what is really did. I know now to keep it off.
