Help Encryption Questions: Performance and No Lock Screen Possible?

I'm thinking of encrypting my a500, but wondered if it was possible to have no lock screen after doing so? Also, for anyone who's done it, did you notice much of a performance hit?

You must have a lock screen and my experiences is that the performance is heavily impacted.
