Ending a Call

Can anyone please help with this problem i have trying to end calls?

When i finish a call and move the phone away from my face to end the call the screen remains blank and i do not get the 'end call' option. Thankfully if the person i'm talking to hangs up then after a few seconds i get the home screen. But it comes back with the screen lock on as though its been idle.

This is particularly annoying when i dial and it goes to someones answer phone as i have no way of hanging up. Pressing the power button (or any other) has no effect either. I am having to rip the back off and remove the battery as the phone remains dead.

I've had the phone about 6 months and it worked ok until a couple of weeks ago.

All suggestions welcome, thanks.

Try 'ProxyLightSensor' on the marketplace. Works on my Desire, just tried it.
1.0 = Not close.
0.0 = Close, proximity sensed.

Found 'ProxyLightTester' and this works. Its giving me 0.0 no matter if i cover the sensor or not, but the light sensor is changing as i cover it.
So i guess that tells me the proximity sensor is stuck on 'close' which would explain why it doesnt register me moving away from it.
You can guess my next question! Any idea what i do to fix it?

Well, it sounds like a hardware fault, which would need a repair.
But in case it's just a kernel fault maybe you could try a soft-reset (battery-out when powered on). If that doesn't work, then try a factory reset. You should do this before sending it back for repair anyway, so you'll have lost nothing.

I'be tried the battery out, its the only way I can end a call! I will try the reset and see if that works. Thanks again, will post how I get on.

I read a review not so long ago on a Case Mate case,the reviewer talked about the free screen protector which covered the proximity sensor and stopped it working properly.

If all else fails and you have a screen protector on it might be worth a shot at removing it and seeing if it works or not.

I had the same issue with my phone when I had it only for 3 weeks. They had to fix the phone. They replaced the main board on the phone. In my case it took them (telus) 3 weeks to fix the phone. Now Ive had it back for 2 months since they fixed it and there is no problem any more. So contact HTC or the Carrier which you bought it from and get it fixed under warranty. In my case I had no case or screen protector on it when it had this issue. If you do have screen protector on it or case then I suggest not using them first and see if that solves the problems. There are also many apps on the marketplace that can help you test your proximity sensor just search proximity sensor or proximity test. Also instead of waiting for the caller to end the call or taking out the battery you could connect a head set and that will unlock the screen. Initially I used to just carry around a headset and use it to temporarily solve the problem.

Well I tried the soft reset and that seems to have done the trick. I was taking the battery out when the phone had died.
Thanks to those who replied, much appreciated, if it happens again I have a few options to try.

oh lord this reminded me so much of when I had my old brick like Samsung f700 touchscreen phone and the damn thing would ALWAYS fault and never light the screen up after a call....was like a major design fault...otherwise it was a really good phone...at the time...
