Help Endless Reboot Cycle

Kaboon

Lurker
My EVO has encountered an issue lately with freezing while doing any variety of things (Facebook, managing settings, messaging, viewing gallery, etc.) and rebooting itself over and over several to unlimited times.

I have to eventually remove the battery for more than 30min when it does this before I can get it to boot normally and function properly.

Backstory: I first noticed problems when using qik and one of the knock-offs of the video chatting apps. (I have NEVER successfully video chatted with anyone using ANY chat app) The front facing camera has stopped working also, I noticed when trying to use it from Tango app. I have since uninstalled all video chat apps and have never used Qik again. (The front camera also does not work in the normal camera mode.)

The front camera issue could be totally unrelated, or a symptom of my problem; just wanted to mention it as well.

Also the phone seems to freeze (and enter reboot loop) more often while charging. Either with the included mini USB/wall charger, or with my Rocketfish car charger.

It can also happen while apparently doing ANY function AT ALL on the phone. Anything can freeze and send it into the reboot loop.

I just brought it home from the Sprint repair center where they told me there is nothing wrong with the phone, and that I may need to delete apps, or wipe the phone completely and start over. This would obviously be my last resort considering the pains involved with setting everything customized back up again. Not to mention I have about 300 "phone" contacts that I never saved as "google," and chose "phone" option when saving a new number. I work at home on a mac and have saved to my SD card in order to try and manually get those contacts onto my computer.

First things first... I need the phone to stop rebooting all the time! It's becoming flat-out unusable. I have moved every app I can to SD card, uninstalled many entirely, and still I'm looking at a white screen frozen on my EVO as I type this and it is plugged in charging. This last time it froze between home screen swypes... ridiculous. I love the phone, has anyone else encountered this at all???

Seems like you may have downloaded a bad app, which messed up your phone. Only use asos from the market for now on. I suggest doing a factory reset like the sprint store suggested.

1) Convert your Phone contacts to Google contacts: Export Phone contacts to SD card. Then import them and choose Google as type. Make sure they sync to Google before resetting phone.

2) Hard reset phone: Turn off. Volume Down and Power until recovery screen comes up. Use Volume Key to highlight Clear Storage. Power button to select. Up volume to confirm.

3) No antivirus or task killer.

Thanks, TheEngineer! Worked like a charm. I knew there had to be an easy way to do that, but even the tech guy at the repair center didn't know how to pull that off. I'll be saving all new contacts as Google contacts now.

I haven't wiped the phone yet but will be momentarily. Just wanted to finish a Words With Friends game first!

I assume this will reset the phone to the point where I will be setting up all my preferences again? Will all my downloaded apps be deleted?

Thanks again, I won't have to ever worry about losing any contacts because of a failed/lost/stolen phone again!

My Evo has been doing this too, along with being very lagy and slow. I did the hard reset and reboot. Everything seemed fine until this morning when it started the cycle all over again. I'm planning on completely re-installing all software for the phone tonight when I get home from my office, hoping it will fix the problem.
