When is B&N going to give us some real apps for the NC like alternate web browsers or MP3 players? I've about had it with seeing new apps being mostly games and kids' stuff.
 
Yep, that's the major argument for rooting the NC, so you have access to the full Market.
B&N see this as a reader, not a tablet. I wouldn't expect to see a lot of diversity in the apps in their market.

According to their website, they see it as a "reader's tablet" but they are giving short shrift to the tablet side of it. We'll see how they fare when others come out with Android-powered e-readers with greater functionality.
 
If you root it your problems are solved. You could even run android from the SD card if you don't want to mess with your internal memory.

You are absolutely correct and I do plan to get the nook2android card at some point but that does not invalidate my complaint. Users shouldn't have to employ a workaround to use the Nook Color as more of a tablet given that it is touted as a "reader's tablet" and all B&N provide, app-wise, are games and kiddy books and games. I still don't get that; would someone actually spend $249 on an ereader and put it in the hands of a toddler?

B&N sells an e-reader. One that has good hardware and software lurking under it's skin. But B&N's prime use for this is to sell books. That's it. They have no desire to turn this into a real tablet. Everything they do is just to increase it's value to sell more books.

My daughter was using my $1500 laptop at age 3. I'd much prefer that this was available at the time. Even now at 6, my wife sometimes cringes when she's using the NC. I remind her that her laptop, or our phones or Xoom cost $600 to replace. The NC only costs $250 to replace.

You can make an SD card for yourself for free but it's your choice.
B&N just want to sale books as mentioned above. They don't care about selling apps as they make less money from a 2 dollar app than they do from a 15 dollar book.

I'm sure I could make an SD card for free but I don't really know enough about it, to be honest.

Welllll, to be honest, I wouldn't let a 3 or 6 yo use a laptop or a Nook; I can't see any good reason to do so given how careless children that age are with things.
 
I've got a buddy at work with about 7 kids, one's been in jail, another got pregnant, one is special needs and keeps him up all night a couple nights a week. He has to bring a case of soup to work because he's broke all the time. No wonder he drinks.

I'm broke and drink, but it's to celebrate no kids. :D

To each thier own.

My 6yo is a wiz on the computer now, far ahead of her class (OMG, they let children use computers at her school.....scandalous!!!).

I'm also a parent who just doesn't hand over something to the kids without supervision. Isn't that what parents are supposed to do?

I guess I can't see any good reason to let a child on an expensive laptop or tablet. I've let children use my desktop computer because then they are only messing with the keyboard and mouse and those are inexpensive components to replace if broken.
