It typically does it's in the bottom right hand corner. It will go away if it changes to a send button though.
The keys changed depending on the app. In the text message app, it's a smiley since we typically don't need to jump lines in a text. In a regular entry field it becomes an enter key that looks a bit like this:I just opened a text message now what I see on my bottom right are the smiley faces. I don't have the "Enter" key

C'mon it's a text message, not a novel. I don't recall ever needing to add a blank line or to drop to a new line in a typical text message...So in text messaging no choice but Smiley
With the HTC phones there's an enter key too, but I never used it on my Desire. I much prefer having access to the smileys rather than having to hit the Menu key, tap the Smiley key, then enter the smiley I want. But that's just me.I guess I wouldn't notice that it's still an enter button for me with Handcent.
