Enter password to unlock

I have a Samsung Galaxy s2 without a sim card and require 'enter password to unlock' which I'm not able to locate. I've tried it with a sim card in the handset but it still asks for the password to unlock.

Any ideas please

1. A new phone wouldn't have a password set.

2. A phone purchased from some other source, means contacting them for the password.

3. Take it to a Samsung Service Centre and they'll sort it out for you.

The password is there to protect the phone in case of unauthorised use or theft.
