Help Epic mic quality

I downloaded Voice Recorder and it seems to work fine, expect for one thing, the voice quality when played back sucks! My old Samsung Sync was so much easier to understand, when playing back voice recorded messages. The Epic has a lot of hiss and scratchiness to it. I hope that's not what other people are hearing on the other end of our conversations. Anyone else have similar results using Voice Recorder, or comments from people their talking to? Could the lousy quality be because of the app, or the Epic's mic?

i havent tried a recorder app, yet.

but with other, reference, audio applications - which require the built-in mic, ive had jumpy, unreliable performance & crashes...

im guessing this is a software issue... kinda sucks bc this phone is, otherwise, such a powerhouse...
