Help Epic won't automatically update e-mail

I've had my phone for a week. I have my phone set to check for new e-mails every 5 minutes but it doesn't seem to be doing it. Any suggestions?
 
I am guessing you dont have it checked. Go to settings>acoounts and sync>whatever gmail account and make sure email has a check in the box next to it. You can also manually sync it from there too just by hitting the menu key and click sync now(only option) but just like above email has to be checked.
