Starting in the top left corner and going clockwise, tap each corner of the screen. This will bypass the auto activation.

does this work for 2.1 eris too? I thought it only worked for motorola droid. thank you

When exactly do you start the sequence??

When I get to the bottom right part, my fingers go to the activate button...

That trick is only for the moto droid in my experience. I used to work at a verizon store and the way to get passed the eris's activation screen is to press skip to get through everything until it gets to the part where it dials activation and let it call, once it asks you to press 1 or 2 just end the call and you should be at the home screen.
