Root Eris All things ROOT THREAD: Apps and ROMS Updated 05/06/2010

This is directed towards GrdLock because it was his image I used.

I used the second root PBOOIMG in your list of roms and I am stuck.
First, navigation force-closes when I look for directions and the same goes for maps. Also every so often the touch keyboard freezes and leaves images burnt into the screen. I have downloaded the SDK for mac but can't run it. I'm missing an enormous step. When I run a terminal and the sdk and adb commands listed in your guide I get

adb [enter]
-bash: adb: command not found.

I want to do the following:

  • fix the force closing
  • get the sdk up and running on my mac
  • install a recovery image
  • start trying not roms preferably grdlocks nexus beta
Hope this thread isn't dead and I can get some help Ive had 3 eris's before I finally got root and can't stop now

Did you get any help or find your answer yet??

I created a flashable zip to add the bash shell to your phone. The version of bash was compiled by mzet over at xda:

shell bash for android - xda-developers

You can download bash_install.zip from here.

** In the meantime I will be working on a ROM as well as another hot-flash zip to install more compiled goodies and an update version of this bash flash which includes a .bashrc **

Anyone know how to change the sound of the boot animation, so I can get of that stupid Verizon tone

I am basing this reply off of DSI-XDA's Kitchen.

You should be able to disable boot screen sounds by altering the following line in /system/media/bootscreen/boot_animation.xml:

FILE:/system/media/bootscreen/boot_animation.xml

useAudio="1"
...change to...
useAudio="0"

There is a download link on gridlck's web page to install the Vanilla Keyboard. Since I'd rather not give out direct links to his page (not sure if he has unlimited bandwidth), you can download it from mine here. It is called:

VanillaKeyboard_SenseUI.zip

And if you want to remove it, the "remove" script is located there as well.

Ok so i was at rooted 2.1 and went back to 100% 1.5 stock. Will i be able to receive the OTA 2.1 update when its released? and can verizon tell that my phone used to be rooted/void warranty?

Acmeinc Im trying to load grdlocks boot animation and I get threw everything besides the final "cp" command and I get a cp write error stateing cp: write error: no space left on device....so I'm guessing everytime I flash a Rom it puts it on my internal storage...so I guess what I'm getting at is do you know how I can get into the internal storage to delete some things so I can push the new bootanimation to the phone? Any and all help is greatly appreciated :)

The coding on the flash attempts to copy to the /system/app rather than /data/app. You can definately use the Terminal Emulator, or adb shell to get in there and remove any unwanted apps from /system/app to free up internal space.

There is an unwanted apps removal thread here. You should be able to use that thread to removal stuff you don't want.

if your talking about..
a store rep, most likely not, that would require some knowledge.
OTA, no.
depo repair facility, possibly but unlikely

+1
The Depo Repair would be the only chance of getting caught....
But chances are that if anybody at depot or verizon caught this, it is because they are a member here or over at XDA and part of the community and know about Dev/ROM...so even then they would ignore it...
When we were first trying to Root, i spoke to 2-3 people that worked at Verizon and they said that they let things slide because they were members around here and there ;)

So lets say i drop my phone in a pool or it gets stepped on/destroyed somehow, will i be able to get a new device if i make an insurance claim?

So wait, even though im back at 1.5 stock, i cant get the ota when its released? Why the hell not?!

If you have Un-Rooted stock 1.5 you will more than likely get OTA update...they will also release it so that you can Flash it with your computer as well...so dont worry so much about that...

As far as Insurance stuff is concerened I cant speak to much on that....

Ok cool. How can i tell if my phone is still rooted? I followed all the instructions and am back to 1.5 100% and i had only ever done the first initail root before, none of the updated ones.
