Eris EOL?

Hey Guys

Ive been looking at a few sites and some are saying that yesterday the 1st the Eris was to be put on the EOL(end of life) List and to be replaced by the incredible when it is released any truth to it?

P.S. saw on the Verizon forums another person had received a Eris with 2.1 already installed, im call b.s. but if its true we could see the update very soon.
 
I would love to know the answer to this. I bought an Eris two weeks ago to "hold me over" until the Incredible comes out. I'm getting very attached to my Eris and if the 2.x OTA was actually released, I might just give him a name and keep him . . .
 
Is the Eris a good phone or not? Has Verizon promised 2.1 or not (or can you install the leak)? If the answer to those two is "yes", then does it really matter if they EOL Eris?

Personally, I like the Eris, and could care less if they EOL it - although I will probably pay retail for an Incredible when it comes out.

Um, the Eris is the first smartphone, and first Android phone I've ever had (previous phone was an original EnV before this). I would probably love any smartphone right now because my previous phone was so outdated.

So I'm probably not the best judge of phones. My thinking is that I am going to have this phone for at least the next 20 months so I want to be sure I get the best phone I can using my NE2 credit and 2-year contract price. I do like Android. I do like HTC. If the Incredible doesn't come, I'll be perfectly happy with my Eris. But if the Incredible comes out, I'll be even happier.
 
I don't see *my* Eris hitting its EOL anytime soon. I finally went with the root 2.1 track and have been playing with it as much as when I got it 2 months ago. It sure beats my old Env2. Just hope I can continue to afford the data plans (wife and I both have the Eris). That extra dough does hurt these days.

I'm "askerd" to mess with my phone and root or flash or whatever all that business is about. I'm sure I could eventually figure it out, but I'd prefer to do it through the *official* method, just because I'm a big baby. :eek:
 
i love my Eris, for a free phone it is amazing, my brother got the moto droid and Ive used it a little and didn't like how big it is, the only problems i've had with the phone was due to being at school in wv where there is no vzw network and the phone runs better that my friends iphone and im still running 1.5, not because im afraid of bricking my phone but cus im patient.

I only gave in after seeing destructions for going back to 1.5 stock. I couldn't resist then, especially given the vague warnings that the root ROM could possibly expire. I do want root on the things I *should[1]* be able to control, even if I have no business with it. My usage of root so far has been to type su every other day to see the # instead of the $ when I'm using ConnectBot locally. I'm not flashing new ROMs or whatnot. I was perfectly content with 1.5 until the temptation and possibilities for regression won out. I'm very happy with 2.1 now.

[1] I bought the thing, I should have root, dammit, never mind the economics involved. I'm the one stuck with this device. Let me do what I want with it, even if I must be warned beforehand. Hell, sudo warns me on my NetBSD system, but it's not a sin or breach of contract to want to be in control, even if it's an illusion to some degree. Give me the freedom to rm -rf if I so choose, even accidentally. I've done it before just for fun.
 
I only understood about a third of your post, yikes! I know Microsoft o/s admin stuff, but nothing Linux. I fear I'm entering the stage in life where new technology is too confusing to bother messing with. Right now I've got enough to learn with a smartphone and that is keeping me pretty happy.

Sorry to be so technologically challenged.:(

Keep in mind that in the forums about 10% of the factual information we read is posted by users who are not "technologically challenged." The vast majority of forum users are learning, some admit it and some do not.

You're in the majority, oppendroid, do not lament. ;)
 
Unlike Windows, which is build around one platform, Android is nicely and properly layered, so once the hardware-specific support is working, it won't have to be touched much, if ever. That means it becomes a lot less effort for Verizon (or any other carrier) to support a model for longer after it's been discontinued. So there's hope for post-Eris upgrades.

If Verizon doesn't do it, someone else might. After all, there are ports of 2.1 for the G1, which T-Mobile isn't really supporting anymore, either.

The Eris should not be EOL in my opinion. The Eris hasn't even received 2.1 yet and it's a great budget Android phone. If Verizon took it out of their Android Line up, it would only leave 2 high end Androids, the Droid and Incredible. There needs to be a low end, budget priced Android to appeal to others.

Thank you for the vote of confidence, Frisco. I am a technical writer with a background in server/client and network security but I am lost in this Android arena.

I must be at the beginning of a new learning curve. I read once that an individual typically goes through three phases of learning:

1. Unconscious incompetence - you don't know what you don't know.
2. Conscious incompetence - you know you don't know anything.
3. Conscious competence - you finally know your stuff.

And then, we turn 40 and start losing our memory . . . oy.

Yeah, but by 60 or so you might find it again. Of course, like most things that lie around unused over time, there is less of it when you find it than when you lost it, but still...

Being old is a relative term. I have seen young people in their 30s behaving like 60.

Actually we're starting to see more of that and other mental-impairment behaviors in younger people. A few even seem to have no feeling as to why they are in this world, let alone why they are in a certain room. Most of those types seem to get employment at Radio Shack and Verizon.

I dont think you have to worry about EOL at this point.

The Eris has become a good jumping off point to get customers to jump into the smart phone arena and net Verizon a serious amount of new data plan signups. So the fact they are practically giving this phone away is just good business on their part and in no way signals an early demise in my opinion.
