Eris still worth getting?

As much as I love my Eris, I'd wait another month or two before upgrading if you really want Android. Better phones will come out, with Froyo, mind you. I love my Eris, but would I recommend you get it now, when other newer better phones are right around the corner? No, lol. If you must get a phone now, go for the Incredible or Ally if you want a keyboard. But I would recommend you wait. Don't get me wrong, the Eris is a GREAT phone, but to me it would just make more sense to wait a bit.

You can't wait forever (maybe?). At some point you will want to purchase and when you do without a doubt, there will be something bigger and better just down the road. You should be happy/satisfied with your item, while having it meet your needs. Kind of like an experience buying a PC; you get the latest and greatest then a couple months later you can buy a bigger, faster machine for less than what you just paid for yours.

Yeah, these are the two perspectives I've been struggling with. I wish I could go play with the two of them side-by-side, but with the shortages that's not an option.

Thanks for the opinions everyone.

To be honest i love my Eris, but that was after i did some tinkering and tweaking. I loaded the full v2.1 image (aka the v3 leak), rooted and then did a lot of optimizing. i am very pleased with the results. But for me that's the fun part of having a device like this. If you don't mind tweaking your phone the Eris is a steal of a device.

But the Incredible is definitely a nice upgrade with double the processor speed (without overclocking) and 8GB of built in storage, plus it's guaranteed to be updated to at least Android 2.2. I still call it the Eris V2 :) and for $150 that's not bad of an upgrade.

Plus yeah there's always gonna be something better on the horizon no matter what you grab ;)

I'm a bit tempted to buy another Eris on eBay so i can load the beta of Froyo to mess with it and test tweaks, but thats how I am :) They are getting cheap with no contract even

As much as I love my Eris, i wouldn't recommend getting one now on a two year contract. Forget the fact that the phone is 7 months old on Verizon, the Hero itself is almost a year and a half old now? Old school technology. Yes, the phone does everything i want it to, but i can't imagine locking myself down with it for two more years at this point.

Spend some extra coin and get a better phone, grab the incredible or possibly wait for the new Motorola Droid phones coming out soon.

I know this will probably piss some Eris users off, but it's my opinion. I still love my Eris, just not enough to recommend locking someone down for two years.

+1 I totally agree. The eris was ok when released but now that it is EOL, and there are some great phones coming, I would not buy it now.

Think of it like this... Would you walk into a computer store and ask to buy
a new 5 year old computer. Yeah Ill take that P4 3Ghz machine that was kick butt back in 2005.

use the coin and get something newer.

OP,

Do you know anyone that has an Eris or Incredible? Play with their phone, especially if it is stock since that is likely what you would be using unless you truly want to root.

If you can live with the Eris being underpowered, it is a great option. It's a basic phone that does what most need it to, albeit with less flash, for an affordable price up front. If you want the phone to scream, root it and install a custom ROM. My preference at the moment is White Widow, despite what may or may not be said about the ROM.

The Incredible from what I gather screams out of the box, has many nice touches to it that make it a worthy high-end device. With root, and eventually Froyo, it will be a fun device for sure and worth keeping for two years.

That's another thing - look at each phone carefully. You are married to it for two years. (Or 18 months if you are luck to get an early upgrade)

horrible analogy...... hes not asking if he should buy a Razr....... hes asking about a phone thats 9 months since its release.........

the fact that android phones are being released at such a rapid pace doesnt mean the eris is "old"........ I predict before the end of the year they will announce an EOL date for the Incredible....... in January will you call that junk?........ the EVO came out a couple days ago.... by Feb/March it will be looking at EOL....... will it be old junk then?.... you will never have the latest and greatest phone more than a few weeks before it becomes outdated

would you buy a dual core computer?? even though theres quads, I5, and I7?

sure.... dual cores still outsell the 3 newer technologies combined

This is what I did: bought the Eris(free). Will trade for the incredible when it comes out. Just cuz its more advanced. But I'll say this though, the Eris is pretty incredible too.

Actually his analogy isn't too far off. The Eris is based off the Hero which is a year old and the processor is approaching two years? It's old by todays standards. The phone lags quite a bit doing simple things such as ending a phone call. Now why would you want to lock yourself down for two years with something like that?

Your phone lags that bad?

Glad I rooted and use a custom ROM.

FWIW, I have both phones and can say with all certainty that you should wait for the incredible.

The Eris is a beautiful phone and I truly love holding it in my hand. It's got the perfect build but there is that occasional lag and unresponsive keys that everyone is referring to. I haven't rooted it yet because it's my wife's and I want to be absolutely sure it will speed things up AND that I know what I'm doing, so maybe that will change things.

As it is, I'm running ADW.launcher on both phones which I really like and recommend for added flexibility.

But in reality, there is no comparison in terms of performance. The incredible is lightning fast and an absolute marvel to use.

This doesn't diminish the Eris at all in my eyes. As I said earlier, if I could have the body of Eris and the guts of Incredible I would be overjoyed.

But with 2.2 coming and way better specs, the Incredible is the way to go.

I can say with 100% certainty that the previous poster's experience with the two side by side was an aberration, possibly a defective Incredible.

Either way, you'll have a great phone, but two years is a long time!!!
