This is the lite version right? If it is I don't want it because it doesn't have HTTPS service.

The Lite version of ET doesn't have https. This is some of the best money I've spent in a long time. I get functional Internet access when I travel, and I don't have to deal with hotels that either a) have free, crappy unsecured WiFi or b) have Internet service that I have to pay $10-12 per night to use.

I just wish the developers would hurry up with drivers for Mac OS (currently using ET on my MacBook Pro with Windows 7).

I did with gmail. ET says the lite does not have HTTPS. So don't know what to believe now I'm using it and get HTTPS :/

I dunno I think the lite version has it too unless there is a hidden timer to cut off HTTPS service.

A few things:

Someone posted a link to the older versions of EasyTether Lite where it was free and everything was unlocked. Supposedly, it doesn't even ask you to upgrade to the one that finally locks out the free HTTPS.

If you upgraded to 2.1, you'll need to change your settings to allow debugging in order for the PC to realize your phone and be able to connect through the USB. Otherwise, it won't detect it.

An update for ET was released today. Before you snag it, make sure to download and install the Windows drivers on your PC. If you don't, the updated app on your phone won't be able to connect.

using ET to submit this post. a little slower than my regular comcast connection...but far better than nothing.

edit: just received/sent gmail with it as well.

It no longer works with 2.1v2. I posted that link btw.

just installed PDAnet like 10 mins ago. runs slower than i thought it would. im using it right now to post this. aside from it possibly voiding my contract (which i really wouldn't mind), this is ****ing awesome.

As for detection, it is trivial to detect tethering by inspecting higher up in the OSI stack, rather than only at the IP layer: your PC browser's "User-Agent:" string is certainly different than the one used by any of the available browsers for Eris. This requires only inspection of HTTP GET requests heading for port 80 in a TCP connection.

Try Display User Agent - Browser Detection on the Eris, and then on the tethered device for an example.
I finally got around to testing this.

The user agent string returned from that web site is the same whether I connect using PdaNet on the Eris or a Wi-Fi connection from my laptop to my router. In both cases it's:
Opera/9.80 (Windows NT 6.1; U; en) Presto/2.2.15 Version/10.10

It makes sense. Tethering the Eris to a computer does not involve using the browser on the Eris.

I know this is old but I thought i would mention im over 7 gigs this month so far. I just signed a new 2 year with vzw too so i could get my new phone. If they wanna drop me they arnt getting this thing back! As many emails as they send me I would think they would mention they are un happy with my usage if they were.

why the fuss over data? it is unlimited. i have gone over 10gb a few times d/l'ing torrents. never a problem. i mean, i havent read every post here but, did someone read some fine print somewhere that unlimited actually means limited? i wouldnt put it past vzw to try to screw their customers, but i never saw it.

As far as data usage, I would think that there is a threshold where you have their attention (maybe around 5GB) if you exceed it. If you keep exceeding it, then they may contact you to see what you are doing.

I've had no luck using PdaNet on my Eris & Windows 7 laptop, USB connected. On the laptop side it just always says, "Waiting for User". Any suggestions? Is there an alternative software to PdaNet that will work?
