Eris Text Deletion

@Gentle_Mescalito

So.......you wasted your time to sign up, log in, and cry? Have you asked any questions regarding what you could do to solve this problem? I would be happy to help you if you are still around. Post back with a question and I think there are many of us who would like to help. But to go through this just to complain is.......well.......I don't know.

If the screen needs to be active, just change the screen timeout to Never. At least you wont' have to keep tapping the screen to keep it active :)

At least with my iPhone (back when I used one) I never had any trouble with this. Particularly because I never needed to delete text because it wouldn't cause the messaging app??? to be sluggish.

No I didn't sign up to this site so I can "cry." But I sure do find it sad that to complain about this phone is the first thing I could think of. Yeah I'm still having problems deleting the thread but I haven't tried doing it anymore. For this quickdelete thing I searched it in the app store and reviews were kinda bad so I went against getting it. So what are the best tips for deleting a thread composed of OVER 2,000 texts?

When I get back home I will look into it. Have you actually called HTC yet, or just email?

Nah, I honestly don't even have the desire to bother calling them so I can delete a huge text message. It's whatever, I mean I know now which is the best smartphone for me. But I have to stick with this Eris and learn from my mistakes amirite?

seeing as how Verizon just raised our ETF, looks like you can go back to your iphone and be perfectly content

Sorry for being slow, but what is ETF? I wish I could go to an iPhone but AT&T won't give me a contract without a $400 deposit!! >.< That's why I went with Verizon. So basically in my iPhone days I had a Pick Your Plan account with AT&T and my iPhone never had data. So it defeated the purpose of it unless I had wifi.

So you are giving up? You had the desire to cry to us, people that are here to help but you don't have the desire to cry to the people that are also there to help and made the phone. Sounds like you just want to cry so you can be the center of attention. Thats cool, I will just put you on ignore.

Don't be such an ass  If you know how to delete the over 2,300 text thread in the best possible way, then please go ahead and enlighten me with your knowledge. You've posted nothing helpful to me thus far and have just said I'm here crying

I just emailed them. So I ask politely to please refrain from using "cry, or crying" in your statements about me. Can we just move this thread in a positive direction from here on out?

ETF is Early Termination Fee, Its the giant rod that VZW has for people who want an early out. As for your problem with messages i would also like to know if there is a way to get rid of a bulk of them without my phone crashing harder then Tiger Woods

Oh god! Well I didn't plan on doing the early termination cause I knew there were fees. I'm gonna stick with the Eris for two years.

I tried deleting the thread again from inside it and after I hit okay it just sits there, like no loading thing or anything. So I push back then it goes to a black screen. I can go to home screen but when I go back into messaging it goes to black so then I reboot the phone. I guess don't be fooled and just let it sit there?

i complained to HTC awhile about it and they said to delete in small amounts. Now i don't know about you but I haven't figure out how to delete more then one at a time. Someone create a Mass Text Deletion App

I've read above about some Quick Delete app or some crap. I haven't tried it but go ahead and search for it if you want and lemme know if it works if you get it. I'm at the "All Messages" screen after holding my finger on the thread then hitting delete and okaying the "This will delete entire thread" (or will it?) warning. It's just sitting there now

@Gentle_Mescalito

check out Delete Old Messages
and be PATIENT

I'm using Super SMS Quick delete or something like that. It's been sitting there for over ten minutes and it's not even 1% done. If this doesn't work over night since I'm planning on sleeping now, I'll give your suggestion a try! Good luck!:)

Are all the texts from one person? If not, you can long press the contact in the messaging app and the option will come up to delete the conversation.

I know that having to remember to delete messages sucks but on the other hand, my old phone would fill up at 250-300 and just stop receiving messages until I deleted the old ones. It was kind of like a reminder I guess.

Hey JrzDroid, the super sms quick delete thing worked! It probably took about 20 minutes to delete a conversation with over 2,400 messages. But It's finally deleted! Anyways off to bed, cya guise!

Hi.

I'm angry.

I'll never buy another HTC product. I literally can't believe how stupidly this phone was made. If you're in a software engineer making a phone that could receive text messages, wouldn't it make sense that you would want to DELETE them?

First, there is no autodelete. Why do I have to fritter away my time deleting each thread? You could autodelete texts when phones were the size of a brick, and now you're telling me a "smart" phone is too stupid to do that itsself?

Second, when I try and delete a thread my phone freezes up. It says the application needs to be force closed. What The Heck? I emailed HTC about this and their response was:

Thank you for your inquiry regarding the messaging application and its functionality. I can understand how important it is to have a device that meets your needs.

I will be more than happy to forward your complaint to the proper department. I would like to advise to you that the reason why your phone is freezing when you attempt to delete so many messages is because the operating system

@tdavis42: Why so defensive? There is nothing wrong with someone joining a forum to add to a discussion. When someone has a problem with their phone, it's helpful when others chime in with the same problem. To me, it sounded like just because he favors the iPhone, you consider him a crybaby. I didn't see that - I saw someone with a problem that he didn't know how to fix. Relax, man.

Back on topic... I do agree that there should be an auto-delete. My previous phone (Moto RAZR2) always auto-deleted my sent messages at around 400 or so (deleted oldest ones, except pics), but it only allowed me to have just over 100 in my inbox before it was full and wouldn't accept any more (that was annoying!). Anyway, to my point... When I'd delete my "sent" messages, 400+ or so, it would take a longgggg time. You just had to let it go. So I think people shouldn't expect their 500+ threads to be deleted in 2 seconds. It takes time for some reason.

I haven't run into this problem yet on my Eris. The largest thread I deleted was 300-something I think, and it did take a bit of time. I did a long-press then delete on the thread. Strangely though, it let me exit the Messages app. If I opened it again, it wouldn't let me do anything (I assumed because it was still deleting stuff). A few minutes later, I checked again and I was able to use my messages just fine.

If I do run into this problem, I'll try that app that was suggested. However, I do think that the suggestion that was posted by inothome above sounds like it would work, based on what I experienced with my threads.

SMS Backup And Restore.

Backs them up to the SD Card. Deletes.
Restores, if you want, whenever you want.

Push of a button. Done.

Here was the reply from HTC,

"
Thank you for contacting HTC Technical Support. My name is Liz and I will be happy to answer your questions in regards to the deletion of text messages on your device.

I understand how frustrating it is for your device to lag when trying to type out a text message. With deleting over 2,000 text messages, it could take several minutes for it to finish this task. You can do one of two things: you can turn off auto-sleep and let it delete by itself as you suggested, or you may wish to hard reset the device. Please Note: A hard reset will delete all personal information from the device and return it back to factory default settings. This could take up to 10 minutes. I hope this helps. If you have any more questions please reply. I will be more than happy to assist you.

You may also enjoy community.htc.com, our customer-based forum, which has a plethora of information on HTC devices. You may also be able to find feedback here from other users in your area who have purchased from any of HTC’s 3rd party retailers. I would also like to invite you to participate in a customer satisfaction survey located at HTC Online Survey. I hope you have a great day!"

They told me stuff I'd rather not do like factory reset my phone? That's crap IMO lol
