Eris to iPhone - Wise move?

I've been using an Eris for the past 18 months. When I first got the thing I loaded all kinds of applications and rather quickly discovered that I really had no interest in most of them.

Today I use the Eris for making and taking calls, email (GMail & Exchange), calendar, and web browsing. I occasionally use it for Google Navigation as well. Nearly everything else I can do without.

I don't use it for music or books, I have no pictures on it. I only rarely use it as a camera. I had Facebook & Twitter for a while but discovered that neither of them are important enough for me to have them chewing up resources and constantly draining the battery.

So, since I do only a few very common things I'm thinking about going to an iPhone because it is seems to be stable and has a nice polished user experience. What will I miss if I go to the dark side?

Not much of anything if all you are interested in the things you list. The bigger question is any smartphone really necessary? Seems like a simple feature phone can satisfy most of your requirements for a lower monthly cost.

You'll need to buy an app to do your occasional navigation, as the included Maps app does not navigate. You'll have to learn to love the iOS keyboard, because that's all you'll get. You will not get any sort of widgets on the home screens - it's just icons and folders of icons. You won't have a hardware phone button, like the Eris has. You will not be able to change the battery nor add more external storage, such as with an SD card.

Otherwise, and particularly after iOS5 ships this fall, with its better notifications, you will not miss all that much at all, and you'll get a very nice camera and a richer set of applications to choose from to boot. Just do something to protect it - the back is glass and I know a high percentage of iPhone 4 users who have shattered the back panel.

from a usability standpoint the iphone is a great phone, it will be a lot like the eris with a lock screen and an app drawer, no homescreens.
