Hopefully some of you saw the recent study results showing that -- contrary to popular myth -- banning cellphone use or testing while driving actually does NOT significantly reduce accidents! See, for example:

Cellphone curbs may not decrease car crashes

Point is, there are always going to be distracted drivers out there. If someone's not using their cellphone, they're listening to the radio too intently, or daydreaming about their girlfriend, or thinking about what to have for dinner, or talking to a seatmate, or whatever. Much as we hate to admit it, that's just the way it is ... and you'll never be able to legislate it away.

That "study" was nearly instantly debunked by the insurance agencies who have to pay for the damage and injuries resulting from collisions involving cell phone users.

They have no reason at all to distort figures. Cell phone manufacturers do. And they advertise in the publications which spewed that "study" around.

No, I'm to busy trying to keep the truck on the road watching the intersections hoping someone doesn't pull out in front of me or slam on their brakes when they see the flashing lights... :)

Um, that study was SPONSORED by the HDLI, which is a scientific research arm of the insurance industry!! So if you're going to take any study of this at face value, this should be the one.

The Highway Loss Data Institute is not an "arm of the insurance industry," no matter how many exclamation points you use.

It is an insurance company sponsored data base. The "study" was a skewed interpretation of data, as the Transportation Board noted ad infinitum following the release of the phony report.

Studies are studies and no matter how much they try they can never be 100% accurate. I base things off of real world experience when I can. In the real world, most people are self absorbed and pretty stupid. They are paying attention to what they need to do and where they need to be and nothing else. I drive 70 miles in HEAVY traffic to and from work Monday through Friday. The joke I made about putting on make up, I have watched other women do this in traffic. I have seen men shaving, one woman too. People using laptops, talking on cell phones, texting, reading the paper, reading novels, yelling at their kids, etc. Nobody drives the way they are supposed to and people cause accidents all the time. I have been in several car wrecks (none my fault thank God) and 2 of them were caused by people on cell phones. All of them were caused by self absorbed people not paying attention to the rest of the human population and only thinking about themselves. One was caused by a guy who decided to commit suicide on a major interstate. I rolled my car three times because of that guy. Excuse me for speaking ill of the dead, but that guy was a colossal selfish moron and he came close to take 5 other lives that day besides his own.

I voted yes, because I do use my phone while driving. I don't text while moving, but I am still behind the wheel when doing it. If I plan on talking I use bluetooth, either speaker or earpiece. Anyone who doesn't shouldn't be allowed on the road.

EDIT: This little rant was my thousandth post.

i used to be able to txt and drive with my bb curve, every key in its place and easy to find.......

now,

i tried to maybe one word answers even with swype... oh well i read somewhere it was dangerous awhile back ... ;)

I have before, and occasionally still do. However, most of the time if I receive a text while driving I will instead just call the person. Arguably still a distraction, but eh, I can't really judge others.

I even produced a PSA once for texting while driving. Irony I suppose.

That is funny. I too have produced and voiced a couple of psa's concerning this very issue....yet I have done it myself! I know hypocrite right! I honestly try not to though, it's so dangerous!

I don't even like talking on the phone while driving. 10+ years as a cop responding to accidents kinda makes you realize what can happen when you're not paying attention..

Actually, most of the drivers who try to kill me with their inattentiveness seem to be middle-aged women piloting minivans full of kids. I think that a national ban on "driving while being a soccer mom" is in order!

I'm surprised how many people don't txt while driving. My job requires me to use a laptop, radio, cell, and drive at the same time. I don't see why it's against the law to txt while driving when every cop out there is required to do so much more.

i mastered holding the phone right next to my steering wheel so it is in my eye sight just like a speedometer, tach, etc...

I would imagine that cops get better driving training than most of us do. At least that is what I see on all those police chase shows. ;)

I dunno .. I've seen come cops who were pretty lousy drivers. Maybe because they know they're exempt from getting ticketed ...

Yeah, well your just adding one more thing to the mix that can distract you...

dunno I find that txt'ing is the most distraction out of the mix...

besides any legal debate this thread gets into, I forget which app I had installed that gave me a general key pad layout for anyone who has just upgraded from a non smart phone. It allows you to use T9/Word, etc. and is slightly easier at times, though texting on a touch screen like the Eris can't be advised

I saw a cop almost rear-end someone the other night when it was snowing. His front bumper was not more than 2 inches away from the guy in front of him because he was driving like a moron. In the two seconds it seems like a sure-thing, I turned off the music and told my sister to watch the fun. Didn't happen. :(

Would've been nice to see the guy write himself a ticket.

Here in IL I think they have outlawed it but many people still do including myself occasionally.

Hence the reason why outlawing it does not reduce accidents - because people are still doing it. Outlawing it, however, I suppose has ramifications if you actually get into an accident and it can be proved that you were sending a text message at the time of the accident. Which should be pretty trivial in many cases.
