Eris went through washer

Last weekend my hubby left his Eris in his pants as well and yep it went through a full wash cycle and then when I stuffed the laundry into the dryer I heard the dreaded clunk clunk.... /heart stopped

I took the case, battery cover etc off and put the phone in a bowl of rice for 2 days before even trying to turn it on.

The battery is of course dead, but the phone is ok!
I tested it with my own phone's battery and everything is fully functional.
only evidence are a few marks behind the screen from the water, but hubby will have to deal with it since we didn't get insurance this time around.

The Eris is a tough little phone!

Still waiting for the new battery to arrive from Seidio, which I of course ordered 2 days before the big sale.... lol

I suppose this is as good a time as any to point out that it is not cooked rice you put your device in, but dry, raw rice.

Seems like common sense, but there are some ex-iPhone users reading in here.

My Ipod classic went through the wash once. I just didn't turn it on for a week and let it set in a dry place. After a week I plugged the charger in for 3 days before trying to operate it. It works fine now.
Just don't try to send power to it until it is completely dry. Electronics don't break from water. They just break when electrical current shorts everything out from the water.

Okay just looked it up on Asurions site and it is $89 well im bout to file my claim after i try another battery

Good Lord I was joking; I didn't think anybody would put their phone in cooked rice, not even iPhone users.

So let me get this straight. You put the phone in uncooked, raw rice, even if you are an ex-iPhone user? And if I didn't drop my phone in water, do I just put it in cooked rice? If so, how long should I let the rice cool down or do I at all?

Ok, this is a good time to clear this up.. first, get everything together:

  • 1 1/2 cups uncooked long-grain white rice
  • 3 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
  • 1/3 cup chopped onion
  • 1 clove garlic, peeled and minced
  • 5 eggs, beaten
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce, divided
  • 2 stalks celery, thinly sliced
  • 4 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 (8 ounce) can bamboo shoots, drained
  • 2 carrots, shredded
  • 3/4 cup snow peas
  • 3 green onions, sliced
Ok, now we're almost ready for immersion. Get the iPhone.

Geez, this isn't that hard guys. The phone goes into uncooked rice after it gets wet. Only iPhones go into cooked rice after they get wet. It is important for the rice to be steaming hot when you put it in too. If you actually have a rice steamer then it is even better. :D

Now wait a minute...you bring up a great point here. What about Fried Rice? Is that a no-no because it will fry your phone?

Only phones made and sold in China can go into fried rice.

Will Rice-A-Roni work? The added dry pasta must account for something!

What are you crazy?!?!?

You can't put an Asian phone in pasta! Didn't your parents teach you anything? Only Italian made phones can go in pasta. If you were to place a US used, Asian designed phone in a pasta/rice mix it would come out with some strange Italian/Chinese hybrid language pack that could never be removed. Let's not even discuss the fact that the phone would only get service in San Fransisco after that too.

make sure you get a new battery and try that. my phone ALMOST went through a wash cycle and only was dunked for 5 minutes and when i tried the rice trick and it didnt start up i thought i was SOL. Got a new battery and it worked just fine.

A friend of mine didn't notice her dumb phone in the laundry until after the clothes were dried. It worked fine right away.

My eris went into the toilet...
It still works I just couldn't use it anymore since it fell into a public toilet

but yeah it's definitely covered under Asurion(Spelling)

it's just not going to be free. Like 90 bucks if im not mistaken(i think i saw someone mention above)

Doing your own laundry and getting just one game? Sheesh. If you softmodded your Wii, you wouldn't have to worry about the laundry. Then, mommy would do it, she'd have tossed the phone in the wash, and then she'd have to buy you a new one. Oh, and you didn't have to do laundry.

How old are you? I feel I could teach you a lot of things.

I cant guarantee this for all water damage but I have had good luck in the past with some PC components.
Here are the steps I have followed.

1. take device apart and rinse with distilled water or with PCB safe cleaner ( NOT tap or bottled ) The reason for this step is water has minerals in it that will cause shorts and what not.
2. blow it off ( a can of air will work )
3. let it sit for a a few days, with the PCB cleaner about a day.

I have had a few video cards and mother boards and laptops that people have asked me to fix.
I have had this work about 75% of the time. ( this could be just good luck )
but worth a shot before shelling out the $$ for a new one or warranty.

Best of luck !!

Droid.eris speaking from my new account.

HAHA 17

Ohh and the water Bricked the phone because all it does is boot in loops even after loading another immage lol. the screen isnt that bright and has little streaks running through it. Ugh maybe this is a good thing because the next eris I get im not goin to any 2.1 leak im just going to stay at 1.5

Even though 2.1 was so nice with the widgets for the 2.x operating system and being able to get a little bit more battery and a better signal at my house
