Good question. Is Google Voice anything like Skype? Because Verizon and Skype just agreed to some kind of contract in which skype can be used on your phone. Skype to Skype calls are not counted against your minutes. So I'm thinking, if the Wifi works with no phone service you can still use Skype. So if Skype and Google Voice are similar then I would say yes....you can make calls using Google voice.
Only problem is they might make it so you have to use the mobile service to use skype on your phone.
You open up a whole new scenario of people buying smartphones that are WiFi capable without phone service. Then using a third party "skype" type app to make calls. I wish I knew more about designing apps right about now. Downside is that the only way to make and receive calls is to be connected to Wifi somewhere. So it's not like you have constant phone capability.
I have a question for any one in the know. Is there a mobile card AND a wifi card in the phone? Or is it one card that does both? Then I can see how they can disable WiFi if you don't pay your bill.
So, Bxrider, have you tried using Google Voice to make a call? If vzw killed your mobile service, but your wi-fi still works, seems to me that you should be able to make phone calls using GV (when you're in a wi-fi area, anyway).
If I turn off 3g while I'm at home and decide to use my wifi, will I still receive MMS messages? I know SMS and voice will work. I've noticed that my apps still work through wifi. I'm new to this switching back and forth. Before I've always kept 3g on, but I've decided to try and save some battery.
Any downfalls from going to wifi instead of 3g?
Also, I thought I read somewhere that 3g will turn off automatically if wifi is connected?
