Root Error 171 when trying to root/update to Gingerbread

Hello all :)

Firstly - my apologies, I'm a first-timer here and similarly this is the first time I've attempted anything complicated with Android. However, between us my Dad and I have spent an entire weekend and tried every fix we can find yet we still seem unable to install this update.

To cut a long story short, I've had my Desire since December 2010 and am mostly very happy with it, however the memory issues are becoming a massive problem so I need to lose the Orange/HTC apps. I asked my Dad to assist with this, and he came up with the solution of running the HTC update to take me from 2.2 to 2.3, which clearly states you will lose anything preinstalled, hopefully acting as a dummies' alternative to rooting.

We've downloaded and unzipped the files from the HTC website, set up HTC sync, and then run the installation programme. The problem is that we get error #171, unable to detect USB connection, time and time again. We've tried four different computers (one Win XP, one Win Vista and two Win 7), as well as three different USB cables. The phone is set to allow installation of non-market apps, USB debugging enabled, and not to sleep. I've disabled my antivirus, antispyware, and set my laptop to not go into standby. The program is set to run in compatibility mode for windows vista service pack 2, which was a fix someone had, and run as an administrator. We tried using a different connection utility too, and I've even factory reset the phone in case there was a setting on there which was causing a problem. Someone had suggested that running it through twice, ie letting it error but then doing it again without resetting the phone, but that gives error #170, which again is that the phone is not connected. We've used HTC sync, connected as a disk drive, charge only... all to no avail. My Dad did something involving ADB and drivers but I'm not sure exactly what, and other than that we're at a loss as to what else to do.

I'd really appreciate some help with this, I'm hoping we've just missed something obvious. I'm a little scared to root manually but will do this if there is no way of getting this method to work.

Thank you!

Jen

It's all pointless. Here's for why.

The phone memory is Set in 3 main partitions.

/system 250 MB - android and pre installed apps

/cache 40 MB - market download temporary storage

/data 147MB - user installed apps, settings and data. Reported as "internal storage"

These are fixed so no amount of official updates will re-allocate /system space for /data use. Yes the 2.3 update removes the orange branding and some HTC apps but this will in no way improve the situation.

The best bet is at this stage, to root. Read the root memory faq to understand your memory option. Read the rooting faq and then one of the 2 rooting method guides.

These guides are step by step. Match those with the faqs and you are armed with all you need.

After reading and before doing, be sure to ask us for clarification on anything you don't understand. We prefer to help you understand than to help you fix a broken device ;)

There is a LOT to absorb but it is so very worth it. Good luck

Edit - all the above guides and faqs are linked in the "all things root guide" sticky thread.

Oh wow, ok, thanks for explaining :) that definitely makes clear a few things which were confusing me! Thanks for your quick reply, I think I'll set aside a good few hours and make that tomorrow's mission - will come back if I have any problems or anything doesn't make sense.

Fingers crossed!!!
