Help Error "android.process.media has stopped unexpectedly" when SD card mounted

Hi

My son just "inherited" his uncles "old" HTC Desire yesterday. And he is now very keen on getting started.
The uncle made a reset to factory settings (android 2.2, sw-number(!?) 2.29.405.5, etc.) and formatted the SD card prior to delivering the phone.

Now, the phone raises the error "android.process.media has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again" whenever we start a wide number of applications, including camera, market and system sw update through "about phone".
I've been reading that problems with the SD card may cause this, so I formatted the 4GB card, replaced it with a 128MB (!) I had, formatted that. No result.
However, unmounting SD card the eliminates the error!!!
But that's not a lasting solution, my son says.. :-)

I also guessed (googled) that a system update would help, but the system sw update just says "checking..." or similar forever, no matter if I try with wifi or 3G.

Maybe system sw update won't update because the SD card is not mounted.. ;-)

So I'm kind of stuck.. Any bright ideas??

Rgds

*Never mind!!*

In total despair, I just made a fresh reset to factory defaults - and surprisingly it helped!!! :-)

I guess the uncle physically unmounted the SD card _after_ his reset to factory defaults _without_ using the unmount feature of android, thus messing something up in android... or something like that... :-)
Anyway, my son is happy, installing and configuring and I'm only a few minutes away from a beer ;-)
