Help Error disappears too quickly ("Unable to migrate database....")

This started happening about 2 days ago. Maybe 5 - 10 times per day very randomly, an error message will pop up on my screen and dissappears before I can fully read it. I would love to get a screenshot, but it's literally only there for 1 second.

I can't read the whole message, but it starts with "Unable to migrate database...."

I un-installed all recent apps that were installed and it's still happening. I can't find anything by searching the Internet.

Is there anyway I can find out which app is causing this? Obviously, a developer somewhere has an error in their code, but I can't figure out which app it is.

This is an LG V10 on Verizon with latest updates. Not rooted.

Please let me know if anyone can help!

Hey Johnny, welcome to our AndroidForums.

I think I can help you grab the information you need, so let's try this:

- download / install the Terminal Emulator for Android

- start-up that app and have it ready for when the pop-up message appears

- when the message appears, switch-over to the terminal emulator app and type:

logcat -f /sdcard/lc.txt -t 100

(you can set the filename that the -f switch uses to whatever filename you'd like to capture the logcat output to)

That should cause the logcat utility to dump the last 100 lines of the system log, hopefully catching the information about the app that's reporting your issue.

If you'd like to dump the entire file, you can use the "-d" switch in place of the "-t 100" argument.

Now you transfer that /sdcard/lc.txt file (or whatever you named it) back to your PC and examine it at your convenience.

Hope that helps!

:)

Hey Johnny, welcome to our AndroidForums.

Thanks so much! That is a great tool that I didn't know existed. I have Linux on my home PC, so I'm looking forward to seeing how nerdy I can get with this. Probably not very, since I'm not rooted...

I'm glad I started playing with it a bit before the message appears again. I missed the part where you said to open it and have it ready. I was noticing that the log was missing a bunch of data and realized it was because I kept opening and closing the terminal and it won't log when closed. This really should do the trick and now I can't wait for the error!

I'll update when/if I can get the info.

Thanks again.

No problem :).

Since you've got Linux, it should be a breeze to have you do/try this using adb from a Linux shell.

I gotta run out for a bit, but I'll post back info/instructions for that for you then.

Cheers!

Okay, if want to try to do this from your Linux box:

- download the extract the contents of the sdk-tools.zip file to your PC (see this post for other details)

- start-up a shell and change to whatever directory you extracted the above sdk-tools.zip files to

- make sure you've enabled USB debugging on your device (Settings -> Developer options -> USB debugging)

(if you don't see the Developer options in your Settings menu, try going to Settings -> About phone -> scroll to the bottom to Build number and tap that row (Build number) 7 times to enable the Develop options menu)

- connect-up your Android device to your PC

(note: on my Nexus devices, I have to change the USB connectivity setting (pull-down the notification shade to see the USB connection settings) from Charge this device to Transfer photos (PTP) -- not sure you'll have to do this in Linux, but keep that in mind)

- verify adb connectivity to your device:

sudo ./adb devices

(note: you may be prompted to verify/allow the RSA fingerprint here on your Android device)

- you should hopefully see something like the following:

sudo ./adb devices
List of devices attached
123456789012123237 device

- if so, then you should be able to launch your logcat or other shell commands like so:

sudo ./adb shell
logcat -f /sdcard/lc.txt -t 100 (you're running this from your Android)
exit

sudo ./adb logcat -f /sdcard/lc.txt -t 100

sudo ./adb logcat -t 100 > lc.txt (capture the logcat output to a local file on your PC)

Make sense?

Cheers!

:)
