error message when I try to open contacts

When I try to open contacts (default installed contacts not aftermarket program) I get an error "The process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." and I am forced to close. Trying again does not help, it does the same thing every time.

The phone is a VM LG Optimus Elite, How do I rest it and how do I do a factory re-install for the default software? I assume this will wipe out the contacts ...but in it's current condition I can't get to them anyway.

Most, if not all the answers you need should be in that forum.
Try clearing the cache, and dalvik cache also.
Reboot the phone once in a while never hurts either.
