Essential Apps

Lurker
Hi all,

I've ust got my first modern phone (htc desire) and i believe that there are thosands upon thousands of apps available for it.

So what are the essential ones i should download for starters?

Looking forward to your reply.

A few I would recommend are...

IMDb
Evernote
Beautiful Widgets (costs)
Handcent SMS (already stated above but it's awesome!)
FotMob 6.0 (if your into the footy)
Wifi Keyboard (if your near a computer a lot being able to txt using your keyboard is a god send)

Games wise...

Angry Birds
Flick Kick Football (costs)
Red Card Rampage (costs)
Pacman Championship Edition (costs)
WordUp

Hope this helps.

First of all a file manager :) e.g. Estrongs File Explorer (free in market).

Harry

Personally I go with Explorer (free and ad free).

  • Call Confirm (prevents accidental calls)
  • SMS Backup + (backs up SMS, MMS, and call logs, with the option to restore)
  • Appbrain App Market (shames the standard market)

Those are my three essentials, my other favourite apps are just geared towards personal preference.

Launcher Pro paid version. It makes the phone far better than having it just with the native HTC Sense.

Also:
Winamp
Astrid Tasks
Google Listen (podcasts)
RockPlayer
Catch
SwitchPro widget
AnyCut
Wallpaper Switch

It goes without saying that you should GET SWYPE. NOW. DO IT.

Here's the rest of my list (in no particular order):

1) Evernote (and don't forget the partner app on your computer too.)
2) Spotify (and the app for your computer)
3) FX Camera
4) Angry Birds
5) Aldiko book reader
6) Chordbot (if you're a budding musician)

Contrary to popular opinion I suggest you avoid Handcent and Chomp like the plague.

How does that work VizaulProphet? I downloaded the app altered my input method via language and settings and reset on phone screen to wifi input (menu from holding down finger on screen for 2 seconds) but where should I be on my computer screen?

Folder Organiser - Allows you to use custom app / folder icons
Volume Locker - Stops me accidentally changing ringer volume
Swype or SlideIT keyboards
Mini Info - Displays battery / memory info
Audio Manager - Allows you to easily change ringer , media, notification volume, etc,.
Astro File Manager - File Manager
AppBrain App Market -
RockPlayer Media Player - Great media player that plays all .avi / .mkv files.
Handcent SMS - Great alternative SMS app

Once you've done that if you pull down your Notification bar there will be an address there similar to "http://192.168.1.64:7777/" - you point your web browser to that link and it will bring up a page, whatever you type on that page will appear on your phone. Keep in mind this only works if your phone & PC or laptop is connected to the same wireless device. If you have any other problems let me know, I'm happy to help.

LauncherPro - Best Home App IMO (Needs to be paid though to get the widgets)
AndroXplorer - Great File Manager
Folder Organizer - Massively Useful
Quick System Info - Handy :)
SMS Backup+ - Backup and restore SMS, MMS and Call Logs
PowerAmp - Best Music Player around (Time limited unless you pay though)
Aldiko - Great free book reader
Soundhound - Always useful to know what that song is on the radio
Rockplayer - Superb for video
Tunee Music - Despite dubious legality...find that song and get it on your phone immediately
Financisto - Best personal finance app around..as long as you keep it updated of course :)
Leo - I live in Germany and speak very little German...so this is invaluable
Mobisle Notes - Great notes app including reminders
Appbrain App Market - Best way to look at the market
CSipSimple - Really handy, although struggles over 3G. I connect to VoipCheap with mine, works really well - Can also integrate with the dialler
Miren Browser - Really really quick
gReader - Great Google Reader app
Nimbuzz - Best chat client IMO...although if left on, it hits the battery quite hard
Touiteur - Great Twitter client..I just moved to it after Twidroyd started FC'ing following an update - Glad I did now though
DailyStrip - Everyone needs Dilbert, Cyanide and Happiness and the Wizard of ID in their life
DropBox - Seriously useful
Angry Birds + AB Seasons
Bubble Burst 2
Wordfeud

Unless specified, I have the free versions of everything :)

Another thumbs up for Dropbox - couldn't work (or play) without it. There's a native client for Android, in addition to PC/Mac/ip* , so you can keep all your content up to date across all your platforms. You can grant access to colleagues and friends too.

Wavesecure to enable tracking of your phone if lost, cloud backup / resture of contacts / sms / photos etc

Costs money, but worth it for the peave of mind

Unstable, battery-draining system-hogs.

Multiple installs etc end with the same result.

Plus an app to make your Desire look like an iPhone? A tad desperate don't you think?

I have Handcent....didn't install it so it looks like an iPhone (although I do like the speech bubble effect). It was more for the widget.

I also like the way that the pop-up allows me to reply to texts without having to come out of the application I'm in.

Not for me - Handcent doesn't drain my battery, nor is it unstable. Same with anything though...YMMV.

Also, it takes what the iphone does...and does it better. My iphone friends are quite envious of some of the features Handcent offers...the main one being the contact pictures....
