Root ethering a Rooted VM Intercept - Where to start?

Hey all,

Zeth here with a question. I just finished rooting my VM Intercept last night and was hoping to get started on taking advantage of the fact that my phone is more or less open for modding.

I'm aware that rooted Androids can now be tethered, or in laymen's terms, used to transmit a wifi signal to wifi-capable devices such as laptops. But the problem is that I'm a complete nub in this area. I simply don't know where to start!

I rooted my phone using this guide here on SDX forums. The search feature on that forum doesn't work for me and the guide doesn't provide any easy-to-understand tips on what to do to enable tethering.

Could someone please shed some light here? I've tried searching but haven't found any threads that are detailed enough. Do I need to install any additional apps to enable tethering, or is it already enabled on my phone via one of the many ROMs that I installed? Are there any additional devices I need to purchase so that I can enable my phone to transmit the wifi signal?

Thanks in advance!

Zeth,

You don't need any new equipment for tethering. For WIFI, your phone becomes a WIFI hot-spot. You need to be rooted though.

Here's the software I use:

wireless_tether_2_0_5.apk - android-wifi-tether - Wireless Tether for Root Users 2.0.5 - Project Hosting on Google Code

Never bothered with USB tethering.

I already rooted my phone using a guide from XDA forums. I've figured out how to USB tether but I'd like to learn how to tether without needing one. Wireless Tether app from the market works up to the point where I can transmit a signal, but my notebook cannot connect to it.

Any idea why?

I couldn't get the one from Market to work either. The link above is to a more generic version that works on Samsung. I had to allow non-market apps before it would launch.

Good luck.

I'll try it later tonight. Here's to hoping that Samsung's cruddy USB drives don't cause anymore problems.

Well. Turns out theo's link works like magic. Little to no hassle involved.

Only problem is it's much slower than USB tethering. I can see a lot of possibilities for this, with my dorm room being one such example. Free wifi is so slow that I'll probably get faster webpage load speeds if I use my Intercept to tether.

Thanks a lot!
