Root Everything about rooting? Help pleaseeee

So I am bored of my droid and really want to root so I have a few questions.

Whats the best way to root your droid1?

What are ROMs?

How can I keep my phone from getting bricked or whatever?

Can I return my phone to the stock settings if I don't like?

What will it actually do?

Yaa ik but ni literally have NOO idea what to do.. soo is it better to use the automatic rooter thing or manually do it? And after you do that what do you do...?

I'm a nooob as well. A little searching and reading uncovered these gems:

How to root the phone:

And, for a quick explination of what a nandroid backup is and how to do it:

How to install a custom ROM

I haven't actually done it yet - still in the nervous research/read state. But, it's coming along nicely.

I recommend you do it manually: that way you have some idea what to do if things go wrong.
(a) Root the phone.
(b) Install a custom recovery like ClockworkMod or SPRecovery. ROM Manager can do that for you.
(c) BACKUP your phone using nandroid backup in recovery.
(d) Download a ROM via PC and move it to the root of your SD card. If using SPRecovery, rename the ROM.zip "update.zip". Turn off the phone.
(e) Go into recovery by holding the x-button and the power button. EDIT: Wipe data/factory reset. Install ROM from SD card. Reboot system now and ENJOY.
(f) Make ANOTHER backup once everything is back and in place. DONE! :D
