There are things you 2 are not realizing about apple and the iphone. Sure they have 846 apps for farting. Sure they have 988 tetris games. Sure developers are quick to develop for their OS. But you guys need to realize the differences that android allows that apple will not. If you are not happy with the apple stock music player what app in their store can you download to replace it? If you are not happy with their phone dialer what app can replace it? If you want custom widgets where can you put them? If you dont want iTunes crashing your new windows pc what program can you use to sync your music to your iphone?

You see the "walled garden" you hate hearing about isnt just about playing 348 different versions of whack a mole. Its about freedom to customize. It's about apps being allowed to compete with their stock programs. Sure they have some cool apps in their app store. But where is the free turn by turn GPS that can come close to googles navigation?

You see android has a community behind it that thinks deeper into our user experience than just apps that help us make farting noises. We have developers that allow us to customize our phones. Apple tries to stop jailbrakers from gaining the ability to do anything to their core functions of their devices.

I get what your saying but coming from a huge supporter and fan of HTC and Android(I don't think i will buy any other Android device from a company unless it really is innovative), Apple really does walk all over the android market. Never had an iphone(as long as its on At & t i never will) but i have access to all their apps on my itouch.

I would rather have apple's closed ideology and miss out on changing my music player, my dialer and wallpapers galore than Android's open ideology with alot of apps that are average at best.

i'm not knocking android but the walled garden concept really isn't a strong argument. I could see if Apple was a "Walled garden" and only had 300 apps that were subpar...then it would work.

Valid Strong Arguments like until 2010, each iphone has looked completely the same(aside from a slight cosmetic difference) and not much groundbreaking features until iphone 4. Groundbreaking in iphone world not the technology word.

If you guys honestly think people like me bitch about the walled garden because of Apple not allowing in enough apps, then you guys need to actually read what we are saying.

And I'm not being bias. I've owned the last two iPhones, and while I owned them, I didn't really understand what I was missing until I got my EVO with Android OS. The thing is, the Android Market has less apps. But the apps that are there are actually useful (and mostly free) to make my user experience more efficient and enjoyable.

I always laugh when people say Apple is about making the user experience better, not about specs. Please. If Apple wanted the perfect user experience, they'd know not everyone is Steve Jobs and has different preferences in their user experience!

And don't tell me that Android isn't user friendly for a non techy person. My wife has been successfully playing with her Hero and customizing it since we got it 2 weeks ago, with no instructions from me, and she's the one who calls my PS3 a "Black Halo Box" (I kid you not.. wish I was joking) and a "PSP3". For god's sake she can't even figure out how to use the oven, lol.


Everyone is entitled to their opinion of which phone is best, but please don't tell me we are wrong in our opinion because you can't understand what we are even saying. My EVO is more filet mignon than the limited menu of iPhone, no matter how many apps were on it..most didn't serve my real needs. Give me a tethering app that hasn't been banned, an emulator for the games I have purchased on my shelves that I'd like to play on the go without having 2 devices in my pocket, and all the programs I paid money for over and over and over again only to find ones of equal or better value for free on the Android Market, and I'll shut my mouth.

I'm sorry those apps weren't useful to Mr. Jobs, but they were useful to me, and now I have them, and I've never been happier.

If your priority is playing video games on a 3 inch screen then i guess the iphone is fillet mignon. You see you must only like silly video game apps. Now i love video games. On my xbox360 with my new 60inch lcd. Not on a phone. And i have owned 2 iphones.

If anything the apple store is burger king, taco bell and McDonalds. They give you 200k useless apps.

Android gives you much less in number of apps but the android apps are actually useful because you are not restricted like you are with apple.

I have owned iphones and had apps through cydia before apple even had the app store. I understand your argument but will have to disagree. I have found most of apples apps to be trivial and worthless. They are video games and silly 3 minute diversions. Why do you think apple has such a large community of hackers that jailbrake and develop cydia apps for the iphone? Its because many people get bored with the apps that apple allows you to use. They want to have flexibility to customize their phones. It is obvious not something you have an interest in. Just as i dont see the strong value in apple games. I would rather be able to use my gps while streaming pandora and respond to a text message during that trip.

You see apple is a creative yet arrogant company. There is something about them that makes some people want to stay away. The no mms fiasco for years. No multitasking for years. When apple makes a change to their phone its so they can make it easier to remove money from users wallets. They dont give anything. They dont do anything until they can find a way to milk more money from the users. They could have let users send MMS from the beginning. But since it wouldnt help them make money they just ignored the community. They are the first company to get all upset over someone saying something negative about them yet they had a 5 year ad campaign around negative ads towards windows. They have bashed Flash every time they got the chance. They have been telling us Flash wont work on a mobile phone yet it is currently working on Froyo. The reality is they banned flash for 1 reason. Money. They dont want users watching video or playing games via web site. Why? App Store may take a hit. So instead they lie about Flash and their sheep actually follow and start preaching for them. They will not let developers use Adobe developer tools to develop iphone apps anymore. Why? Because then it will be easier for developers to submit their apps on Android and Win Mobile. They are now being investigate by the Justice Department for their business practices.

Now i know i got Way of topic their. But i just cant see letting a company like that get my money. They are unethical and dont deserve it.

Plus android is growing faster than iphone now. Apps will improve. Before long you will be complaining we have too many versions of Whack a mole also.

It's always an interesting discussion to have , Apple vs everyone else.
Most Ifans like the devices apple makes because they simply work for what ever use they were intended to be used for. The only thing I don't like is you are either in the apple world or not. There is no variation, conform or leave.

Those are the choices that the company gives the end user. The software that they put out for most other OS's to work with there products is absolutely brutal. And if you haven't used Itunes on a PC, try it and see for yourself. Apple's Email program is a joke and just plain stupid. These are just a few of my dislikes about the philosophy and outlook of the way they do certain things. The App store is a genius idea. 96% of the apps aren't. The actual phone is brutal and that's being nice.

The "apple tax" is always going to be there, meaning it will always cost more to do the same exact thing on there platform via the competition. That's just a fact of the business model they have, it will looks shiny. It will function okay and it will be considered vintage in 2 generations of any product line. No exceptions.

You can say i am bashing apple if you would like. But i am writing this post via a Mac book pro. And tomorrow i am sure i will be listening to music via my itouch and Alpine radio in my car driving to work. And probably watching something off my apple tv @ night.

Yep, as much as I hate Apple for what they're doing right now, I'd never own a PC. I love my new iMac too much . It's just their whole mobile sector that's messed up in my eyes. I know it's their focus, but sometimes too much of a good thing is a bad thing. They need to lay off a bit and give some more control back to the users. If they just loosened up a little bit, they'd probably take back the market over Android and keep it for good. But it's their stubbornness and greed that will be the end of them.

It'll be the most amazing and terrifying day of my life. iPhones will not exist anymore, and I'll cry at the thought of having to design on a PC and not have OSX. I think it would actually make my mind blow up haha.

Back to the thread.... My girlfriend and I laid in the bed this morning reading the news on our respective phones.me the evo her on her iphone 3g. I Asked her to show me her most useful apps. Every single one their was an equivalent android app that did the same thing only faster. Mrx please name one "Usefull" app that's missing from android.
As far as the walled garden goes... Apple has great ui software the problem is when outside devs implement something better its never allowed. See the tethering app, why cant you change the default keyboard to shapewriter/swype as android allows you too?? That's the major difference in my eyes.

Name one app? Ok, how about facebook. Even if Android has an equivalent app, its always a gimped version.

I love my EVO, but I can see that the apps are still immature. If Google wants to take out the iphone they need a robust app market place. Just like Steve Ballmer likes to say it, "developers, developers, developers!"

Interesting thread. I think Android will be to the iPhone what Windows did to the Mac back in the 90's. Sure Mac had a good head start and lots of apps, but Microsoft beat the hell out of Apple on the open architecture stuff.

We used to have the same flame-wars back then, too. But you know what? As a consulting software engineer, I've been in a lot of corporate IS shops over the years. They all have Windows workstations, even though they're buggy, very complex and have a high learning curve. Never saw a Mac shop or a Linux shop or anything like that (not saying there's not a lot of them out there, but the percentage must be very low).

At some point in the next few years, there will be more developers on Android than iPhone and nobody will be arguing about the apps any more. It will be about the things that truly are important, such as cost of ownership and ability to meet customers' demands. By then, it will be too late. I'm sure the iPhone (and BlackBerry) will survive in their respective niches, but Android will become the 800 pound gorilla.

I totally agree. The battle we saw of OSs on the desktop is being repeated in the mobile space. I foresee Android eventually taking over, but for now its still a young OS.

Android's strength is its customizations because the iPhone doesn't allow you to change it on an OS level. I think this is great and is a definite advantage to Android. But what I'm trying to make a point of is that the general apps of everyday use themselves are much better on the iPhone.

If I'm paying hundreds for a phone and about $2k over the course of a 2yr contract, I want it done right, not something that's been thrown together.

I know! My first experience with Android was just a few months ago and I was just blown away. The in-laws have them and they were constantly using their Heros for GPS nav around Memphis. And I was talking about my ultimate desire for a GPS to be linked into Google so you click on a hyperlinked map as interesting sites went by. "Oh, you mean like this?" (click!)

Well then wouldnt the recent growth of android cause developers to develop for it? Doesnt the growth solve this problem that you state will hurt it in the end? It can only be a weakness and something that can hurt it in the end if the problem is one that is solvable. Is there something in the software or hardware in android phones that makes them inferior gaming devices than iphone? If no, then how can gaming hurt them in the end.

Now with apple there are things that will hurt them in the end. Its arrogance and control. They are stuck on At&t and will probably be for a really long time. Why? because they need control and at&t gives them that. Verizon wouldnt back in the day and probably wont in the future. And in the cell phone world a year is a long time. Look at androids growth in just a year. The closed platform apple operates is a problem that will never be solved. Look at Mac computers. They are still way behind. Why? Control. Apple has to have it.

The thing about android is like many have said here is competition within itself will just bring better development from within. Look at what a leap the EVO or galaxy S have made over the g1. That is what competition does. You give up some control. But in the end you win.

Apple was first to the party. I love apple. I am glad they developed the original iphone. If not who knows what type of phones we would have today would be.

Your point about Miley Cyrus is accurate. And i dont live in a world where i think only my interest are ones that developers will cater to. But in a forum where we are expressing our opinions of platforms i am going to express my opinion. I am going to tell you why "I" consider the android market superior to the apple app store. And core functionality is the reason. And having 199,995 apps that are geared towards my sister, aunt and grandmother isnt a reason i will give the nod to apple. Now i know everyone doesnt want the level of customization that android provides. Many would get lost in the menus. And for them they can have the iphone. Its a nice phone. But it will never be for me as long as android is available.

And yes i know having thousands of developers fighting over customers makes the free usable apps prettier. I get that also. So i understand where you are coming from. But i am willing to trade off a little lipstick and perfume for all the advantages that come with applications that are allowed to customize my user experience.

I think over time, Android will be the top OS to get on your mobile phone in the future, but right now its still an uphill battle. There has been a huge growth of Android support, but its still not showing it on the App front. We're still seeing apps that are gimped of features. I think the problem stems from many things though. I've read the iPhone and Android SDK, and they're both very different. The iPhone SDK is much more mature and probably is the result of quality apps.

Its much cheaper to be an Android developer, so why is it that Android isn't getting the bulk of the talent? I think its because developers make more money on the iPhone platform. So what they do is make the iPhone app, then port it over to an Android device, which has a higher res screen, resulting in blurry graphics.

I disagree with your point about the Verizon/Apple control to some degree. If you can remember back in the day what cell phone interfaces were like, then you would know that they were terrible! Verizon is just like Apple, arrogant and a control freak. What I'm getting at is that, every Verizon phone back in the day had that HORRENDOUS Verizon interface. I'm quite certain that Apple wanted their own iPhone OS, but Verizon said no.

So when the iPhone was released with its very own interface and OS, it launched the smartphone industry into another era of innovation. We are now seeing Mobile OSs in a bigger way now. Never before have we seen the ball and chain from cell phone companies broken and then control given into the hands of phone hardware manufacturers and software companies like HTC and Google.

So ATT giving Apple control back in 2007 was a good thing, a needed thing. I certainly hated Verizon's own mobile UI for a very long time and was hopeful that someday someone would break the control that mobile phone companies have over its customers.

Getting back on topic and sharing my story. I get a lot of people who say "is that the new iPhone". Then when I said no, I tell them is the EVO, and they give me a funny look. I think the problem with this "funny look" is that the name "EVO" is kind of a weird word, so people are like "huh?"

Overall most people are impressed by its huge 4.3 screen and they're amazed when I turn on the front facing camera. My friend who is a big iPhone fan was in awe of the screen size.

it's better to have competition. it makes competitors strive for bigger and better things.
