Root Evo 3D to Virgin?

I was going over things in my head recently, and I thought... what would happen if I had an Evo 3D, and just ran the stock RUU on it? Would it flash over to Virgin Mobile?

I understand that Virgin phones have custom MEIDs, etc. But would the RUU give it one? Would you get one with activation?

If someone could explain, well, we'd all be able to have Evo 3D's for $99 from Ebay...

Thank you in advance... MorpheusX3

Meh, fair enough. I mean I suppose it doesn't matter because I already have a V 4G, but I figured it'd be pretty cool if it was possible.

The ESN is built into (hard coded) the phone.

And yes, it is possible, but trust me, it's easier, safer and more legal just to buy and Evo V.

Even if you did find a good one, Virgin Mobile doesn't like other phones on their network, even if they technically have that phone already :\.

This article might help, it's from XDA: XDA: Flashing HTC EVO 3D to virginmobile
that link is 100% useless...... Its sad that you can find 100s of sites on how to make a bomb but as soon has you say how to to change my phone e s n you get all the lames telling you how illegal it is. Information is not illegal yet.

Information is not illegal yet.
Actually, yes it is/can be.
There is lots of information that is illegal to posses or pass along. In this case though, possessing the equipment and knowledge of cloning cell phones does actually violate some laws.

Cloning was such a huge thing that they passed some very draconian laws about it. Almost all of these laws are outdated as the internet has changed how we see information, but also cloning cell phones isn't what it used to be.

However...
Some of the laws have been changed, unfortunatly most people are only aware of the original law because they are just repeating what others have written. The updated law actually includes a very important addition relating to intent to defraud, which changes it from being outright illegal to a matter of "how good is your lawyer" if you were to actually be caught.

On the other hand, in some states (Missouri being one) it's still blatantly illegal to change an ESN. PERIOD. Even though merchants in those states still do it and no one has been charged for it in a long time.

Regardless, trying to "port" an Evo 3d to virgin doesn't work mathematically. It takes more hours to convert than it does to earn enough working at minimum wage to go buy an Evo v.

I have a sprint evo 3D and Motorola Triumph that Virgin Mobile sent me as a replacement but the earpiece never worked...... So let's test out your theory about the minimum wage job because I'm pretty sure it doesn't take 33 hours. ;-)

You don't have a Sprint Evo 3D that virgin mobile sent you. You have an Virgin Mobile HTC Evo V 4G with a Sprint logo. Just like both of mine.

And the Triumph was always a Virgin Mobile phone so idk why you brought that one up lol

I have a "sprint evo 3D" like I said.... And I have a Triumph that I'm not using right now. Nothing confusing about that.

Why would Virgin Mobile send you a Sprint phone?

Sounds like you have a sprint-branded HTC Evo V 4g, like many users do.

Your phone was an Evo 3d at one time, but it is now an Evo V. The only difference is who the ESN is assigned to and that makes all the difference and also where all of the trouble starts.

The only reason to swap a Triumph ESN to an Evo V would be to cheat VM out of money by using a grandfathered phone, which is absolutely a violation of federal law no matter how you try and play it.

I have a "sprint evo 3d" and!!!!!! A "virgin mobile evo v 4g" its only common sense people. Look at the thread title and the context of what I have said. And I actually added my triumph to my account last night and I downgraded to the $25 plan. I'm about to call them right now so I can use my evo v 4g again and see if the $25 plan sticks.

You cannot use an Evo V with the $25 plan, it will not let you. It gives you an error.

The point of this thread was to take a Sprint Evo 3d and "port" it to Virgin. It's not exactly common sense because you didn't exactly outright say you had both and it isn't listed in your phones. So most of us probably thought you were pulling a fast one.

It doesn't need to be 33 hours.
To do the "swap", you need an Evo 3d, plus a donor. You have to consider their value as part of it. In your case you could sell both the Triumph and the Evo 3d, how many hours do you need now? Even if you were talking about an Intercept and an Evo 3d, you are near the halfway mark to the cost of an Evo V on sale. In the end, you still have a used phone, no warranty, no visual voicemail, no 4g and you run the risk of them figuring it out and (at best) booting you (at worst, jail). You can't even sell the Evo 3d when you are done with it, not without converting it back or putting yourself at risk.

Unless you have the high end software (and no, despite the claims, the pirated versions won't usually do it), you cannot easily change an ESN. They purposely have made it difficult. Even if you have done it, it's still several hours worth of work in most cases to get it fully working.

I found out about the $25 plan and the evo V the hard way...

Actually it is common sense because "Sprint evo 3D" means "Sprint evo 3D".

33 + hours times minimum wage comes out to 240 dollars the price of a evo v 4g....

My point was every time someone ask some lame always comes and says what the person does not want to hear (nor cares about). As you did plus you didn't even bother to say he needs CDMA workstation(or whatever). Like it's against the forum rules to even mention that app.

MorpheusX3 I was shocked that the text police even let this guy speak www.androidforums.com/htc-evo-v-4g/562694-sprint-evo-3d-virgin.html

You clearly insinuated you were using a Sprint Evo 3D on Virgin Mobile service, which you are not. This forum is a nice place where everyone gets along, please don't be rude because of your choice of wording.;)

And I'm not sure if you were referring to Leslie Ann as a "lame who talks about legalities", but if you were - Calling Leslie Ann a "lame" is very uncalled for. She's an amazing ROM developer, she offers a lot of support on these forums, and is a very nice person. Please be more respectful of other members. Granted, you have freedom of speech, but that doesn't give you an excuse to be rude.

Not really, because my Evo V is a Sprint Evo 3d flashed to Virgin (by Virgin). It actually was an Evo 3d at one time. Again, they are the same phone, the name is dictated by carrier.

Same, but not the same, which is why it isn't common sense and why there are lots of people asking how/if they can use their old Evo 3d on Virgin.

Let me explain the math...
Someone wants to port their Evo 3d. The Evo 3d, used, sells for let's say $150 on Ebay. Instead of buying a donor phone or using their donor phone, they could sell said Evo 3d and donor phone. If you have an Evo 3d, and an Intercept, you could sell both for about $170. This means you only need about $70 to buy an Evo V.

If you don't have either phone, it's still only $70 difference.
$70 at minimum wage is a whole lot less than 33 hours.

What you also fail to grasp is that 33 hours isn't an unrealistic number to do this. I know some people who spent well over 50 hours trying to do it and some who were just plain unable to finish. Read every tutorial you like, watch every video, you still will not see how frustrating it is. Everything looks easy on paper and video, in real life, there is no montage.

My point was every time someone ask some lame always comes and says what the person does not want to hear (nor cares about). As you did plus you didn't even bother to say he needs CDMA workstation(or whatever). Like it's against the forum rules to even mention that app.
What did you want me to tell him? You act like I had a choice.

And if you look, I didn't come in and start screaming "It's illegal!". Go back and read what I wrote. I explained that it is more or less a legal gray area, and against forum rules to discuss what is required to do the job.

Could I have told him exactly how to do it? Absolutely.... And then the mods would have deleted the thread, and possibly banned me. So what would be the point?

As for the program, what is the point of telling him the name of one of the programs required when I can't tell him how to use it/them. I can tell you all of the programs you need, and every step, minus one crucial part of course. Unfortunately without that crucial part, everything else is utterly pointless.

So again, I ask, what you think I should have told him.

We were very careful not to discuss the meat and bones of the process, we only discussed the network changes required, which is legal.

LoL this is lame. Could have pointed the guy in the right direction as a starting point and called it a rap. But instead we got this other stuff. Of course you can not tell him in detail here. Google search term or something but got nothing useful. Something is better then nothing.

Like Ali G says "respect".

It took me maybe an hour or two (with no experience) to flash/reprogram my old Evo 4G from Sprint to Cricket, and that was starting totally from stock, so not only did I fully program the phone through QPST and CDMA workshop, I rooted and obtained s-off.

I would imagine it would take a similar amount of time to flash an Evo 3D to Virgin Mobile. The only real extra step would be obtaining the ESN from your donor phone (which can be done without even powering the phone on) and programming that into the Evo 3D.

If it takes someone 30+ hours to do this job then they probably aren't the kind of person that should be attempting a procedure like this.

Point them where?
No forum wants or allows you to tell someone how to change the ESN. The last place that did got into trouble with the FCC.

It's not even close to the same.

Going from Sprint to Cricket only requires changing the network profiles. Not only is that the easiest part, but Cricket gives you the settings. Virgin on the other hand does all they can to hide that information, particularly the 3g password.

Open an Optimus V in QPST or CDMA Workshop and you will see only about 3/4 of the network information you need. That last 25 % requires another program, and it will give you the information in another format, which needs to be translated before you can put it back into the new phone. Even then, you will still be missing some information, you need still another program to get the last bit. Some Virgin phones you simply can't get the information out of them. And that is the easiest part of the whole process.

I count finding the programs as part of the process, and some can be difficult to find.

lol its easier than you think, ive been rockin a sprint 3d with an optimus v as a donor. the esn change as as easy as "Ali Baba opening the door of the 40 theives", but the ha and aaa keys are the hard one. took 2 weeks of research and 4 headaches. hundreds of tabs, and many many diff programs, oh and i dont have 4g and never can due to not having a real virgin evo v. in case you were wondering i still get the same level of 3g service and calling, and all roms work fine (i dont mms ever)

but that being said, this thread is taboo and this knowledge needs to stay hidden, please allow this thread to rebury itself so people who need the info can find it again one day. continuing to discuss it publicly will get the thread deleted, or locked.
