Root EVO 4G First Time Root

jp1216

Newbie
First - thanks for the guides!!

Newbie to rooting. Want the WiFi hotspot option. Rooted last night and installed the standard ROM. Everything went OK. 2 current issues:

1) Installed WiFi Tether. It runs fine on my EVO (with and without password protection). Tried to use WiFi on two other devices (Kindle Fire etc) and it hangs on 'Obtaining IP address'...

2) Used MyBackup to backup my apps and data prior to root. Reinstalling went fine - but Data doesn't transfer. High scores on games and other settings.

Any help - sorry didn't search too hard first....

Which version of wifi tether are you using? Have you tried any other apps like Foxfi or Barnacle? Have you made sure to choose the right device in settings (your EVO)?
Some devices have a hard time connecting to ad hoc networks as well.

As to #2, I can't be of much help as I don't use that app.

WiFi Tether 3.1 - beta 14 (downloaded today from the market)
Device settings - not sure. I know other people with EVO 4Gs that use WiFi Tether so I figured it would work right away.

When you go into settings in the App, it's the first setting "Change Device-Profile". You'll want to choose EVO 4G.

Yes, I selected the EVO in the settings. Issue may be with WiFi in general. I connected this morning to my home WiFi right away. Errors began when I installed WiFi Tether. I now cannot connect to other WiFi spots or use WiFi Tether...

Under advanced WiFi settings, I'm not showing an IP address.

There are several wifi tethers available....you might try 2.08....even though it's still in beta(I think) it solved some of my issues

Yes! 2.0.8 works! Connected that Kindle Fire right away. Thanks.

My only issue (right now) is restoring old data from pre-root. I used MyBackup last night. Apps and games were reinstalled - but settings & high scores etc weren't transferred over. How can I do it? I did use those Angry Birds backup apps for those games (worked BTW), just thought MyBackup would transfer the stuff from the other games...:(

I've never used mybackup pro but....

You need root abilities to backup an apps data. So that's why it didn't restore.

Also, if you flash a custom ROM most of the sense based ones will have the built in sprint hotspot hacked so that it works. I like that app the best.
