my gf gave me her evo (which hasn't been used, still new) and its flashed to metro pcs already, she had it activated on her number, how to i get it activated and have my own number. any help is good :)

*EDIT* its not rooted
also im trying to make sure its flashed, it has the metropcs banner, when i turned it on it still had sprint's intro. when i try to call 611 or 228 a guys voice says account cannot be validated*

IF you personally already have a metro pcs account (and you have a mpcs phone and phone number,) then use this guide: (your password is your birthday)
How to Switch My Metro PCS Service to Another Metro PCS Phone | eHow.com

IF you don't have a metro pcs account, just go into a metro pcs store and start an account. The ESN of your EVO is in the mpcs system which means it's "a metro PCS phone" and they will treat it as such. Just go in and tell them you want to start a new account with your phone.
Either way, it's quite easy.

I just saw your edit. NOW, you DONT NEED to be rooted to get onto the metro pcs system. But, you'll first need to make sure your phone's esn is, in fact, added to their system. If it isn't, you may have a bit of a rough road as opposed to simply starting an account because it is rumoured that metropcs has recently stopped flashing other carrier's phones onto the system (i've yet to personally confirm this in atlanta.) SO, call mpcs and tell them what your esn is (under your battery) and ask them if your esn is in their system (I.E....is it "metro flashed")
If it is, you can just start an account and follow these guides.

1)
HTC Evo 4G MetroPCS HOW TO! - xda-developers

2)
[ROM] MetroDroid v4.0, MetroPCS MMS Scripts, ICS Script is UP! (5/8/12) - xda-developers

if it isn't, you'll need to go the donor phone route:

BUT...you will NEED TO BE ROOTED to follow the guides i listed. So please look at the rooting for dummies sticky in this "all things root" forum. ocnbreeze (and others) will be there to help, so fear not.

ok it was flashed, do i need to have my phone activated it so i can dial ##3424, im trying to connect it to my pc and its not popping up

Fantastic! That's very good news that your phone is on the metro system. Yes. Activate the phone/create an account. After you activate it, you will have full call and text capabilities, but you won't have mms or web. SO..you'll need to root your phone via the sticky I mentioned previously. After you root, go to the xda threads which will guide you on how to provision your phone for data/mms.

ok so i havent activated it yet but im trying to root it first, is there another way to root the evo other than using unrevoked or do i just use the sticky and activate it first. when using unrevoked im having problems with it not letting me root it. it gets too waiting for root (restart if this does not work) and it stays that way for awhile then it says to try again. i had htc sync before all this and uninstalled it, do i need to re-install and try again? do i need to factory wipe, will that stop it from being flashed to metro?
*i suppose i should just activate it and do the sticky*
*android version is 2.3.5*
*not activated, my phone wont boot into recovery mode itll just show the phone and this red symbol*

any help is good :)

Just wait a minute and you'll get some help. It's best to root first and then activate. you don't HAVE to root it first, but it makes it easier if you do

Just follow the sticky and unlock the bootloader. If you're bootloader is already unlocked and you're getting the red symbol on the recovery option that means you need to install a recovery. I can't put a link but google Amon Ra 2.3 or any higher. Once you install a recovery you can flash custom Roms so your mms work with metro. But don't forget to first provision your data using qpst. And to activate phone just make sure you're on a sense Rom and dial *228 and follow the computer instructions
(you also need a sense Rom for DIAG *3424 mode to work, I recommend mikG or Tommy's)

ok it seems like the only thing i have a problem with is dialing the 3424 because it just says *is your account cannot be validated*

*also when i used unrevoked under where it was saying rooting it said :clockworkmode image:*

i called cs to activate it and they told me i need to go to metropcs store and have then put my phone back on the inventory so it can be activated, so i wonder if that could have been the problem.also on my hboot screen it says locked

*edit i unlocked it finally but it still says s-on i used htcdev, i don't think its rooted though*

i think now all i need is a STEP BY STEP way to install a recovery as ive said my bootloader says unlocked but with S-ON still.

With the new method it will say s-on but you can still be rooted. If you follow step 2 and install a recovery, then you can root or change to a rooted rom

To activate your phone you should be able to dial *228 and activated yourself, just make sure you update the prl to a metropcs prl. (#3424 is for programming on pc)
