Root Evo 4g not recognized

Hi guys, so I went to root my evo 4g last night but for some reason my lap to does not want to recongize the device. I tryed switching cables, tryed plugging it in to another computer as well and nothing. Does any one know what the problem is and how I can fix ?
 
Are you meaning for my laptop ? For some reason when I search for new drivers it can't locate them when I go to the android web site it will not down load.i suppose I can try again. Would out have anything to do with it being a replacement phone ?
 
It shouldn't make a difference if it's a replacement phone. This is the link you need for HTC Sync: http://dl3.htc.com/application/HTCSyncv3.0.5579.exe

Click that and it should download both the software and the drivers for you. What's actually happening when you connect the phone to the PC? Does it even register at all?

Do you want me to move this to the Evo forum BTW? It might be a common problem (phone related as opposed to PC related).
 
It does charge when I plug it in. I have it on usb debugging as well as disk drive. Yes if you could move this to another forum that would be good. Also if anyone knows how to root evo 4g after I figure this problem out I would nt mind sending my user IM name to help walk through the steps.
