Help EVO Battery Life vs. Hero (?)

i am at xda and i found the instructions to apply the prl change. i found a few including 0001 but not 40050.
edit. i just found a place where i can download 40050 prl. its with verizon and sprint evdo roaming. i get 1 bar from sprint in my area but i know verizon coverage is much better here. so does that mean with this prl, i can tap into verizon's signal and get better reception? if so, does that affect the voice calls or data reception. or both?
sorry too many questions. i am both scared and excited.

yup, i got the 40050 from the same page you're referring to. the best PRL is dependent on your location. meaning that just because that one works best for me doesn't mean it will for you. but yeah, what it does is it tells your phone to search for VZW (they're actually Alltel) towers first. it should most certainly improve voice and data. you'll get a higher dl speed, but compared to Sprint's 3G, Sprint's is still slightly faster. the reason for this is the whole Evo having priority on 3G versus other phones on their network. if it were another phone on Sprint, and you took the same phone and put it on VZW, you'd get better speeds with VZW hands down.

also, it's worth noting that people are saying that if you dl over 300mb that you'll get kicked off of Sprint. i'm not sure if this is true, but i figured i'd throw it out there anyway. i don't want anyone to get kicked off of Sprint due to me.

currently i'm trying to research how to edit the sid within the Sprint PRL so i get a better signal, which is compliant to their TOS.

how do you go about killing off something like googletalk?

There is a wonderful free ap called "Startup Auditor". You can set it to prevent an ap to start or even set it to also not letting an app to start after the phone starts. Some apps will keep trying to start. It works. My googletalk never came back. :)

i wouldn't recommend this, though. i'm about to edit my battery saving steps post and warn other users.

disabling gtalk will cause gmail to stop syncing if you're using the gmail app. not sure about the native mail app, but i do know that killing gtalk will cause your gmail to stop syncing in the background.

you can't kill them from running services?
if you're talking about after restarting your phone, everything starts back up and you have to go in and kill stuff off again.
Hey mrvirginia...awesome thread! I was lurking around for the last hour on this forum and finally decided to join so this is my first post!

Anyway, in regards to the sprint apps all starting up on restart/reboot of the evo, I wondered if you noticed on yours or anyone else here seeing these apps all start on their own WITHOUT a reboot! I can kill all my unneccesary running tasks/apps (using Estrongs Task Manager) and go back in the task manager oh, I don't know, mebee 10-15 minutes later and ALL THE SPRINT CRAP is running again!! AmazonMP3, settings, dialer, etc, even a couple of 3rd party market apps all start themselves without me loading them on demand.

Any ideas?! Thanks!

Yep, gtalk enables push for gmail, so basically you get mail right away.

FWIW - and for the adventurous -

  • I added my Gmail account to my native mail app, update frequency 1 hr
  • I went to Settings -> Applications -> GMail and wiped the data area and force quit it
  • I started up GTalk (talk in drawer) and removed the auto startup, then signed out
  • Kept the Gtalk data under Applications management - but just basically killed it

The Market seems just fine [*], I get my gmail once an hour along with anything else, and I don't do social networking (iow - I have zero clue if what I did might impact social networking apps others may be using).

I don't really need push email - other than, I've considered setting up a separate gmail account and forwarding work email there and turning all that stuff back on...

Nah. Too lazy, like the way extra battery savings.

That said - I've never been able to get gdocs to sync or upload files. I've done the whole backout of above steps, uninstall/reinstall - nada. Seems I'm not alone in that one, I didn't find any solutions on google, so for now, it's a read-only or send kinda thing - useless, iow.

If anyone can tie that back to gtalk or the gmail setup, I'll gladly eat crow.

Use the above advice at your own risk.

Given that Sprint recommends killing off gtalk as a battery-savings feature, I don't think I'm breaking anything too important in Android itself.

[*] EDIT - I originally posted you could turn off Background Data - I'm an idiot. The Market doesn't work at all if you do that. So - I removed that from the list.

I ordered a battery charger that charges the battery without the phone. It came with 2 new batteries that claim to be "high capacity" but I'm not too sure about that.
Regardless... having the ability to keep 2 fully charged batteries with me at all times has completely ended my battery drain concerns.
I rarely even plug my phone in anymore & when I do it's just out of habit.
For a little over $30.00 I got the charger & 2 batteries delivered to my house in 3 days with standard shipping.
I highly recommend it!
