Root Evo Design with latest ICS Root Help

RossGA

Lurker
I have been looking for a definitive Root guide for this phone for the past few days, and it seems there are about 10 different ways to do it, depending on what Firmware you are on. And even then most of them don't work.

Since I need help rooting, let me tell you exactly what I have got and I would appreciate being sent in the right direction. I have rooted several phones in the past (Aria, Desire, Original Iphone Jailbreak), but this thing has lost me.

And I swore I put this in the "All things root" category, but since it showed up here, would a mod kindly move it please.....Thanks......

HTC Evo Design 4G

Sprint

Latest ICS Update

Hardware version 002

Software version 3.14.651.0 710RD

Android Version 4.0.3

Sense 3.6

OK, so as I understand it, I have to unlock the bootloader via HTCdev.com. So I registered at the site, but when I select my device and click on "Begin unlock bootloader" nothing happens. Am I supposed to be sent a download? Do I need to have the phone plugged in with USB Debug on? Are there any special instructions? When I hit that button....nothing..... happens.....almost like a script on the page is not working. I have contacted them about it, but I don't have much optimism.

I use Firefox as a browser, should I try something else?

Does anybody have an alternate method to unlock the bootloader?

So, lets get to that point, and go from there.....Then Clockwork mod right?

When I get this all done, I will post a definitive root guide for this phone, with all the latest updates. Since that is what I have got. And if the answers already exist on this forum, please send me in that direction. But when I searched, I didn't turn anything up.

Help?

Hey thanks for moving that!

I discovered what was wrong at HTC's website; it simply does not like Firefox. It runs OK with Chrome, and I now have an unlocked bootloader.

Will continue the process tomorrow....

Thanks,

OK, so I got it rooted.....finally...

So, I was going to do an official root guide, however I feel there are a couple on this forum that are good (thanks a ton, BTW). Just a couple of notes to add to any/all root guides...

#1 HTC's site does not like Firefox. It does work with Chrome, I didn't test IE.

#2 The proper CWM for the latest ICS (as of Sept/2012) is out there, but not officially linked to. I had to dig though 2Fast's forum to find it. You can edit the txt files included with one of the other CWMs; but to a newbie like myself, I was content to find one that already been edited and worked.

#3 Rooting on older HTC phones was a one click process, and about 10 things happened at once. Rooting here is obviously a multi-step process, and I think many people just assume everybody already knows the steps. I Unlocked the bootloader, installed CWM, and couldn't figure out where Superuser was (duh). I was quick to realize that you still have to install/push Superuser... but to someone who is never dealt with SU, this step isn't very well covered; or even mentioned from what I found..

Now running unlocked, rooted Sprint ICS......... debating about a different ROM.....any suggestions as to the best one for Sprint?

Excuse me, sir, but could you possibly create a backup of the stock pre-setup wizard ICS from Sprint? I have searched for it on the net, but cannot find it, yet. I have a custom ROM, but it's Gingerbread. I have used custom ICS, but I can't get some things to work for me. I decided to get the ICS update, but cannot since my device is not with Sprint and I failed to make a backup of Sprint's settings in QPST. If you can create one and upload it for me and/or others that would be very great. Thank you.

So this is helpful but could you please provide the links for the items you found? I am a complete noob at this and I have most of the steps down accept when I load the bootloader it says image not found or something to that effect. I know this is probably outdated and sorry for that. I have an htc evo design 4g through boost mobile and have android version 4.0.3, htc sense version 3.6, software number 1.14.653.0 710rd, kernal version 3.0.16 geac4a23 anything else I forgot please let me know. Not stupid just having a hard time finding the proper items required to finish this process of rooting. Thank you
