Help Evo Mail Problem

So, I just got my Evo 4g about two weeks ago. I upgraded from a Hero running 1.5. On my Hero, I had my gmail and school e-mail on the phone. The Hero got the e-mails from both accounts immediately as they were received, but on the Evo I am only getting e-mails when I open the app for Gmail or Mail. Does anyone have a fix for this? I've tried downloading apps from the market like the unread Gmail counter and everything but they only show the e-mails if I open the app. Any help is good!

Android 2.2
Not rooted
In atlanta so I have 4g everywhere

menu-settings-accounts and sync. Make sure Background Data and Auto sync are checked, then go into each account and make sure they are set to get instant email.
