Help Evo - New SD Card - Recognition issues

JPJayhawk

Lurker
So I just got a 16GB Kingston microSD card to replace the original 8GB.

The PC reads the card when I use the adapter.

The Evo recognizes the card when the phone is disconnected from the PC and when it's connected in Charge mode.

The Evo DOES NOT recognize the card when I choose the Mount as disk drive option when connected with the USB cable.

Any ideas?

I did not attempt to format the card first because it seemed to be readable on the PC.

Thanks for any help.

Sometimes, you need to format a new card, but if it's readable in the phone, and you can copy files to it, etc., you're good. That being said, the behavior you described is exactly what is supposed to happen. When you connect your phone to your computer and mount it as a disk drive, the sd card must unmount on the phone. You can't have any kind of storage media mounted on two devices at once. It's never been possible; it never will be possible. Having two devices with the ability to write to the same physical storage (we're not talking network storage, here) will cause conflicts. Trust me, if you put in your old card, it will do the exact same thing.

So to get the media from my old card onto the new one, I need to do it using the PC reader itself?

(Just wondering though...how come I was able to copy the files off of the 8GB card while it was on my phone onto my computer?)

What do you mean? When you connect the phone to your computer and mount it as a disk drive, you can access the card as a drive on the computer. I assume you just copied your files from that drive to somewhere else on your computer. When you connect your phone now, just copy the files back to whatever drive it mounts as when you connect the phone.

For example, I'll assume you're using windows. When you connect the phone, if you see drive F:\ appear, for example, that's your phone. You can copy files to drive F:\, but you won't able to access them from the phone until you disconnect it.

I had this issue with a 32gb card (not the same, but similar). Turned out to be a bad card. Replaced it and everything is now fine.

Ok...I was having a problem with my phone and card and apps installed on the card not loading into the phone....any you can see allllll my mess here:

http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-sup...alled-sd-card-not-running-not-app-drawer.html

Anyway, I got the phone to read the apps on the card AND I can mount my phone via USB to copy files to my computer.

Here is my issue...and NOTE, I have a MAC computer (running OS 10.4)...

When I mount my phone via USB the "highest" level in the SD card folder hierarchy that I can see and access is INSIDE "sdcard." When I mount the card using SwiFTP, I can see folders PARALLEL to "sdcard" like "sys" and "system" and some other "parallel" files. I BELIEVE that level is "/mnt" or something like that.

I am ROOTED with unrEVOked...

My FEAR is that if I copy ONLY what is in the folder "sdcard"...which is all I can access via USB and my Mac OS...that I will be MISSING important files that are "parallel" to and/or up a file level from the "sdcard" so that when I WIPE my current card and try to put the data back, I'll be missing data and will have a PROBLEM after the backup, wipe and reinstall of the card data.

INTERESTINGLY, if I connect via SwiFTP and the wifi in my house I CAN see the "higher"/deeper file hierarchy parallel to "sdcard" BUT for me to backup using my FTP client and wifi connection with SwiFTP would take DAYS because that connection is VERY VERY SLOW compared to my USB connection.

SO, am I safe to ONLY copy the "sdcard" connects and forget the rest of the stuff that I know exists?? Or do I need to get to that "/mnt" level and copy from THAT POINT on??

THANKS!!

Well..this may not be the same problem but I bought new a 16GB card and inserted it into my EVO and it did not see the card. My PC saw the card and the files in it but not the phone. I was doing this with the cable connected to the USB port on my PC. When I disconnected the cable, the phone recognized the card and showed the available space.

Are you basically saying that you didn't see the card on the phone until you unplugged the phone from your computer? That's what's supposed to happen. You can only have the card mounted on your phone or the computer, not both at the same time. Or are you saying you didn't see the card until you plugged it into the computer, then unplugged it? If that's the case, it might have just not mounted the first time around for whatever reason.
