EVO no contract question

If the EVO was available with 3G/4G service without having to sign a 24 month contract it would have been an easier sale for me hence my interest in your experience with it off contract..

Brand New, NO CONTRACT Evo's back in stock on Amazon!!!

$450 OUT THE DOOR! (no tax, free shipping)

Amazon.com: HTC EVO 4G Android Phone (Sprint, Phone Only, No Service): Cell Phones & Accessories

Looks like the same deal I got back at launch JUST GOT BETTER! (I paid $19 more )

No tax, free 2 day shipping. I literally got mine within 48 hours of placing the order. Still can't believe there were no strings.

Still can't believe what you can do with your evo with absolutely zero service. (Free turn by turn nav for example) Search the threads for my posts on the matter. You'll be surprised. :D

Appreciate that link/your replies & enthusiasm but what I meant was month to month no contract service with no ETF like Verizon plans to offer with the Galaxy Tab & T-mobile on some smartphones I've heard..?

Wouldn't it be less expensive to buy on contract (<$200) & cancel & pay ETF ($200, total ~$400) & could even test out both just Wi-Fi & with 3G-4G service for 30 days?

Isn't Sprint on contract truly the only unlimited service remaining out there among the major carriers (compared to EVO lookalike Incredible HD coming to Verizon Nov 23 )?

I have considered just buying it off contract as well but will wait on news of Nexus 2 a week from tomorrow (probably will have a weak speaker unfortunately but better camcorder & stock 2.3?) & possibly end of the month if I can wait for other developments..:cool:

I use google voice for:
A) a free phone number

Does google voice route incoming calls to your cell phone, so can dial your free phone number and you can pick it up? Or does it route the call to your voicemail box so that you can only receive voicemail messages via that phone number?

Does google voice route incoming calls to your cell phone?

For me? No because I do not have a cell phone 'line' to route them to.

But you could route calls to a cell, or any phone number for that matter, if you have one.

So I can dial your free phone number and you can pick it up?

If you mean me, no. If I had actual cell phone service then yes. Gv will forward all calls to whatever number's yours.

In my case, If you need me to pick up, you know, actually answer the phone when you dial, you'll have to skype me or call my skype number. (now you got me thinking I should forward all gv calls to my skype number... hmmm...)

Or does it route the call to your voicemail box so that you can only receive voicemail messages via that phone number?

Yes. And that's exactly what I use gv for. (+ free phone-number to phone-number sms texting).

If you call my number, you will go right to voice mail, and if i'm in a wifi hotspot, my evo will beep me that I've got a new msg and I can play your voice mail or read the transcript (which is more comical than useful), then I will call your number back with a voip-to-phone app. Probably with fring cuz of the lower rates than skype.

If i'm not in a wifi hot-spot when you call, I'll get your msg when I 'roam' into one.

Mainly, my contacts and I just text each other all day anyway because we're all supposed to be working ;)

I am thinking of going off the Sprint grid with my wifi too? How do you handle picture mail and what are the cons of going wifi?

You can get an app like Groove IP and it will let you make/receive calls using your EVO on wifi with your google voice acct.

Indeed. Groove IP was in fact the missing piece of the puzzle. Found it a couple weeks ago and it has transformed my no contract Evo into a full function wifi phone. Make and get calls all the time. The reliability and quality's enough to depend on. Major thanks to the devs of that gem of an app. Best five bucks ever spent.

I've never heard of Picture Mail before this post so I googled it. Is this what you mean?
Sprint Picture Mail
Sprint Service Details

I've never tried this. I doubt I'll have access to that as I have no working relationship with sprint.

To share pictures online I use gmail or fb. Of course over wifi. You tap the photo and hit share, select how you want to share that. To share with somebody in the same room I use the 'bump' app. Both devices need bump to perform this though to be honest, I don't know if it's making that handshake over wifi or bluetooth. (guess I have some experimenting to do).

To share videos, I just click 'share' and youtube over wifi. Video files get large and take a minute to send/receive but once they're on yt the people you're sharing them with only need to click 'play'.

What are the cons of wifi-only?

You're service is pocketed. In fact wifi hotspots only.
None of the Sprint apps (nascar, football etc...) work. I consider that stuff bloat-ware anyway.

The pros?

No contract or Bill.
Everything else works. I mean everything. Even free turn by turn with google nav.

Wi-Fi Naught O: You are clearly the guy I need to talk to! Long story short...I want to use Evo 4g via WiFi, no phone contract. (for apps, games, text, etc. don't need phone service) Thanks to some info on this forum I finally got connected to my wifi router at home (which will change soon - another story). But now I still can't access the Market and when I try to connect to my gmail account it says "Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server...could be temporary...etc." Any tips on what I should do next??? I appreciate any guidance you may have.
