Help Evo Rebooting on its own

ok, so my phone has been running great since I got it. Had the occasional reboot happen, but nothing to worry about. Over the last week or so, the reboots have increased. One time, was playing Robo Defense, ALL other times while playing Homerun Battle 3D in matchup mode. Hard reset the phone, installed the new update from Sprint today, nothing helps. any ideas? Or do I need to return it to get it replaced. HW version 0003.

I have an HTC Incredible of as a test phone (fairly similar device) for our Android apps and have been seeing these reboots as well. This phone has never been activated on Verizon and essentially sits on my desk doing nothing 99% of the time. Every now and again it catches my eye when the "HTC Incredible" screen appears for no particular reason (i.e., it reboots). The other test phones (Droid, Nexus One, G1) have never done this. Totally stock, has never been rooted.

I've yet to do any real research into the problem.

Just want to update my reboot situation for all the geniuses out there:

7. Stranger still, when I got the phone, there were someone else's pictures on it! It was supposedly a brand-new phone! Probably not related, but still.

I bought 2 of these phones. my wifes came with other peoples pics on it too! what did they look like? wonder if its the same people! (jk)
I'm guessing some of the phones are being redistributed after returns based on buyers remorse or something... Or maybe they were used by executives, then placed back in circulation when they were finished using them... If so this would be a used phone, not even a refurb, and therefore illegal to sell as new.

Had this same problem until I did this recent update, and my phone bricked...
Starting to form a clear picture of whats happened on that end. but I started a seperate thread for that, don't wanna spam.

I DO NOT EVEN KNOW HOW TO ROOT. in case anyone was going to ask... seems to be vogue to ask that.

Mine also reboots. HW 003 with update

I have exchange and always -on checked.

So far it is happening when I in a phone call only.

I have my phone bluetoothed to my car stereo, playing music with google turn by turn and when I am on a phone call the phone will reboot.

This is my observation. The phone reboots when an app any app calls for the GPS after its been idle. After the reboot its fine untill the GPS is idle again the next call for the GPS will reboot the phone. I exchanged the phone once and the new one is doing the same thing.

I just began having the same reboot issues. I am wondering if the GPS is a factor. I can force a reboot by going to the Google homepage -- after you see the "acquiring location" message it will reboot every time.

It will reboot with no apps beyond the browser running. I do have Facebook for sense and Google goggles and maps installed. Don't use Exchange or ActiveSync.

I've had the phone about 10 days now, and noticed that on a rather consistent basis that the phone would reboot when I went into Google Maps or Sprint Navigation.

So I did a quick test... TURN GPS OFF and use google maps or navigation just fine.
However, I can immediately go TURN GPS ON, then go right back into google maps and it will reboot.

GPS ON = reboot upon starting Google Maps

GPS OFF= no reboot

I have a varitey of other apps installed and using Advance task killer. For the most part, I have only seen the rebooting issue while using a GPS enabling application.
I hope this helps... someone get to a resolution quicker.
I love the EVO, but can't continue dealing with these reboots.

I have traced my resets to something very specfic on the HTC EVO - GPS. Whether it is the Compass,Google Navigation or Sprint Navigation - it barfs and resets. Any ideas as this simply should not happen.

My phone started resetting just a few days ago. I attempted a hard reset and now my phone won't turn on at all. It gets as far as the white htc screen and that's it -- I'm headed to the Sprint store today

It's defianately GPS related. If you invoke any app that calls a GPS function after the GPS has been idle for some time (this includes surfing to google.com) the phone will reboot.

One can work around it by disabling the GPS but this disables many features of the phone! Hopefully there will be a fix soon ??? I'm hoping that Sprint/HTC are working on a solution besides hoping that 2.2 fixes it.

Had my phone mess up in me yesterday. Restarted on its own every 5-10th minutes over 2 hours until I noticed the gps icon showing up. Turned it off and the problem is gone. I turned it back on a few hours later and I haven't had any problems since. Weird, because I dint do anything new or install anything. Ut showed up our of no where. I'm guessing its a network issue maybe?

EDIT: i take that back, i tried to open Google Maps and it rebooted itself twice. The problem is reproducible at least. Now I just have to wonder why now? I never had this problem before.

Not sure if this helps, but I demo'ed mine at lunch yesterday with the GPS on. Then I shut it off. I usually never have gps on... When I was home that evening, I had it plugged in charging, and was playing Sudoku. I put it down to get a drik, and when I returned, it was in the middle of a reboot. I've never had this happen before, except right after the ota update.

changing the "Always Enable MObile Data On" only fixes it until you restart the phone. When the phone reboots, change it from whatever it was set at and you can use the GPS. If you restart the phone again and use the GPS it'll reboot.

I have been having this rebooting problem for a week or so now. It has to do with the GPS. If i turn it off everything is ok. Turn it back on and it reboots everytime any program hit the gps.

has anyone found a solution to this? i really don't want to bring the phone in to get it exchanged but with my first 30 days coming up, i might have to and i don't want to get a crappy build version of the EVO :/

In my case the only fix was to turn off the GPS, which of course disables some capabilities. I have no idea if Sprint/HTC are aware of the issue as I haven't read anything.

The difficulty is that the problem described in the thread has morphed. The thread was initially about spontaneous reboots, but it has changed into discussion of GPS app-related reboots. The OTA update ostensibly took care of the initial spontaneous reboot problem.

not true. myself and others have narrowed it down to the GPS being the cause of the reboots. i have already installed the two OTA updates. the problem is reproducible as well.

Take a few moments to re-read my post.

well i did a factory reset through settings > privacy and without any additional apps, there are no problems so far with the GPS on or off. hopefully it'll stay the same as i reinstall all my apps.

I use touchdown, no lock. I had the data on checked hen I rechecked. I saw it reboot as it ran a gps check. I have turned off location service and so far no reboot, eleven minutes so far. My phone is not rooted. All apps have come from market with exception of no lock from app brain.

Update. Waited twenty minutes turned on gps and it rebooted. I think it is gps issue.

FYI. Wifes EVO with no exchange has has no reboots on her data always on is unchecked. So maybe it is a combo of exchange and gps. I need help this blows.

No problems with out gps on....waited an hour turned gps back on and reboot. So I am in on a gps problem while running exchange. Now does anyone have an answer.

I dont have an answer, my phone was rebooting everytime I tried to use Sprint navigation. I read this thread and did a Factory Reset and it has seemed to have fixed the problem. But my question is "Does my phone have a problem? Should I swap? Is it just a few people having this issue?"

If everyone is having this issue and it needs an upgrade im cool, but if this is happening on only a few phones, I dont want to get stuck with one of them.

Thanks
