Root Evo -recovery problem>*<please help>

Jt9c0nti

Newbie
Everytime i try to enter recovery mode it goes into the startup image , the white screen with the words "htc evo 4g" and thats it , it never changes. I looked everywhere on what to do. Its says to : flash clockmod recovery and then try. : failed , Download QuickBoot and use that app to enter recovery : Failed , then it says hold the volume down and power and enter recovery the old fashioned way: failed it all does the same thing. Its almost like the phone is searching for a recovery file thats not there so it freezes or something. so i need some help on what to do and what files to download and put where , as long as i can enter recovery one time i will be sooo greatful. Please help thanks

Can we get a few more details?

1) Is your phone rooted?
2) More specifically, in hboot (the white screen you got to when you powered on while holding volume down) do you see s-on or s-off?
2) If so, what method did you use to root?
3) Have you ever been able to get into recovery before?
4) You say you tried to flash clockwork; how did you do that?

There are a number of thing we can try, but this information will be helpful.

Welcome to the forums, by the way :).

akazabam i appreciate your quick reply very much , 1. my phone is rooted ,2. i see s-off everytime., 2 :P i used unrevoked but it was wierd because it said it failed but i still got superuser permissions and the wireless tether worked. 3. I have been able to enter recovery one time and i tried to install Cyanogen Rom , but it failed because it was stuck in a boot loop - so i took out the battery and idk how i fixed that. 4. I tried to flash clockwork using RomManager, it says it works then when i go to "reboot into recovery" it just goes into the white "htc evo 4g" screen. thanks so much - and sorry i am such a noob

Don't worry about it, we've all been there :).

1) So you're able to fully boot up into android now? Are you on a ROM? How did you get to where you are now if recovery is broken and CM was giving you bootloops? (I'm just curious what all you did; we should be able to fix this either way).
2) Uninstall ROM manager, then reinstall it. After that, try to flash Clockwork, again, and see if it works.
3) If that doesn't work, download this file:

http://db.tt/PEhJy41

Make sure it stays named PC36IMG.zip, exactly. Connect your phone to your computer as a disk drive, then copy this file to the root of the sdcard (let me know if you need more details on that). Once that is done, reboot back into hboot (I trust at this point, you know what I mean by that). You will be prompted to flash the PC36IMG file. Once it is done, try to boot into recovery from hboot again. If it worked, it will take you to RA recovery.

Let me know how it goes.

OMG BRO YOU DID ITTT! HOLY SHIT !! I ****EN LOVE YOU !!! dudde i spent the whole weekend trying to fix this shit and you finnally helped me . thanks man i really appreaciate it.

you are the man

Lol, glad that worked for you :). Let me know if you need anything else.

EDIT: Which method ended up working, btw? If you now have RA, any nandroid backups you made in CW are not compatible. I feel compelled to make sure you know that :).

akazabam , ok , now i am officially unrooted, can u give me step by step directions on how to re-root my phone without unrevoked? Thanks so much dude

Can I ask what the purpose of doing that was? You already had root with unrevoked. There are other methods, but unrevoked is fine unless you have some other reason.

i needed to unistall because i am taking my black evo(i have both white and black) back to sprint because of a defective camera. And if sprint sees the root , they wont accept warranty . Unrevoked was tooo much stress and i would rather do it manually . & unrevoked said it failed but idk how i got it to work. i would rather do it the disk drive way where you can use pc36img and manually install , i just dont wanna mess it up , thats why im asking you :) thanks again

Ah, ok, I understand :). This is pretty much the only other method:

[ROOT] ~~~ HTC EVO - Universal Auto Root ~~~ v2.2 (works with all version)(1/9/11) - xda-developers

Read the instructions very clearly. I feel compelled to warn you that it seems that this root method has resulted in more problems than unrevoked has. Sometimes unrevoked gets confused towards the end, and reports failure even though a majority of the process worked. Also, with this auto root method, you're going to ultimately be flashing unrevoked-forever, which is the same basic s-off method as unrevoked3. However, you do have the option of flashing the eng bootloader instead.

If you have a phone with 2.02 or 2.10 hboot (version listed in hboot), you can also still use this method:

[ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02/2.10 SOFF - There Will Be Root - Upd. 01.07.11 - xda-developers

But that's probably even more difficult. It's up to you what you want to do.

It's probably the safest method. For various reasons, if I had to do it all over again (which I *could* do) I might not use unrevoked. If you have a newer phone, however, ultimately, you need to use at least unrevoked-forever (which unrevoked3 and most other rooting methods use). Older phones can use the eng hboot. That being said, just use unrevoked. It's the simplest method for when you just learning all of this.

alright thank and do you know the correct steps how to do it? because all i know how to do is plug it in and press start. so can you give me some directions?

Is it normal for my first boot on Cyanogen Mod take like 10 minutes? and its still going booting...? any answeres because this is making me worried

Is it:

a) Sitting at the splash screen?
b) Loading at the boot screen?
c) Stuck in a boot loop (boot animation starts over every few seconds/minutes)?

Did you wipe data/cache/dalvik before flashing it?

You must wipe data/cache/dalvik in recovery before you flash any ROM, especially if you're switching to an AOSP ROM such as CM.

ok i can get into ClockworkMod Recovery V3.0.0.5

I I try to install a z zip from sd card this is what I get.

Installing: /sdcard/EVO/AvaFroyov8-Cricket-Zmod.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Amend scripting (update-script) is no longetr supported.
Amend scripting was deprecated by Google in Android 1.5
It was necessary to remove it when upgrading to the Clockworkmod 3.0 Gingerbread based recovery.
Please switch to Edify Scripting (updater-script and update-binary) to create working update zip packages.
installation aborted.

It's saying that because CW 3.0.0.x only supports a newer update script format called edify. The older, deprecated version is called amend. It's no longer officially supported, but a lot of update scripts (such as the one you're trying to flash) are still using it. Any version of Amon RA recovery or Clocokwork 2.6.0.1 still supports both amend and edify. So, to be able to flash everything, you must flash one of those. You can get CW 2.6.0.1 from ROM manager, or you can flash it as a PC36IMG.zip from here. Instructions are given in the thread.
